Problem using DMM to set gain on JL 1000/1

I am setting the gain on a JL 1000/1v2 using a DMM according to the instructions on page 14 of this pdf

I am using a 50hz 0db sine wave test tone on repeat and I have the head unit at 3/4 of the max.

However, when I hook the DMM up to the the subwoofer outputs according to the diagram and set the DMM to AC Volts, I get readings between 91 and 98 volts. I can't get the volts to drop below 91 even when turning the gain down. Why wouldn't the volts be dropping down to zero when I have the gain all the way down? I am trying to get it to a target value of 54.7 volts.

Any help would be appreciated.

im pretty confident your on the wrong setting on your voltmeter..as in its not what you think its on

check your head unit settings, if you have high pre-out voltage, the sub control all the way up, or your bass control all the way up you may get ridiculously high numbers due to clipping. I once couldn't reach the needed voltage because the HU was set to -10 on sub bass without me knowing.

Yeah i think your on the wrong setting. What music do you listen to? If mostly hip-hop id do 40hz tone.

I have all the factory head unit settings on default (no EQ, no loudness, no -1 or +1 bass settings). I have 40 hz, 45 hz, and 50 hz tones that I am playing on repeat.

Yes thats AC volts. Is your subwoofer level all the way up on your HU?

nope, you need to turn it one to the left. The scale is too big right now, one to the left and you'll read like 9.1 if i'm not mistaken.

My subwoofer level on the factory head unit is set to standard (not - or + anything...it's at neutral).
