Problem: stock Suburu system

I have a friend who has a stock 2000 Suburu Impreza. Whenever she turns up the volume past "24," which isn't too loud, the sound cuts off and is replaced by this horrible high pitched tone. You have to turn it off and back on to play music again.

Any ideas on what it could be?

dont turn it up past 24?

on a more serious note, maybe something going out? a speaker or maybe factory amp

How can I tell? I don't think it's one speaker because all four make that noise. Would replacing the head unit solve the problem?

yea u can try replacing it. if it was the head unit that would do it
