Problem connecting rear view camera to my AVH P1400DVD

I'm trying to install a backup camera connected to a Pioneer AVH P1400DVD. I've got it so when the car goes into reverse the camera activates and the Pioneer see's the video. However, even when NOT in reverse, and with no video signal, the Pioneer keeps the rear view display on (just a blank screen though).

There is a wire on the back of the unit that is labeled rear view camera and the book says it should be hooked to a 'lead' that changes voltage when the car goes into reverse. However, nothing I connect it to seems to work. I tried connecting to the same wire the camera connects to but that changed nothing.

tap into a reverse light, it will see a change in voltage only in reverse that's all I can figure I just use the mirrors.

I've tried tapping that but for some reason it keeps switching to the camera view regardless (even though there is no video signal when not in reverse)
