preout problem

right i have a 4 channel sony explod amp which has RCA inputs for both front and back speakers ( for the 4 channels obviously) and my head unit convently has 2 preouts which means the amp can run 2 6by9's and two front door speakers rather well. but the problem comes when i want to add another amp and a sub(driven purely by the 2nd amp) into the equation...to keep the sony amp running all 4 speakers i need both the RCA cables plugged into it...but to run the 2nd amp i need to have an rca cable going into it from the head unit...which is hard beacause there are only 2 preouts.. can any one tell me where i can magic another preout from? or if there is a cable i can buy to split the RCA'S? thanks alot...if you can help it might save me a trip to halfords and being ripped off!!

There are a couple of different ways what you're needing can be accomplished.

You can either go with a Y-splitter something like this

(what you do not see pictured is the other end of that adapter...it is a single female end to make two leads out of the one you currently have)

OR

If your amp has a set of preamp outputs like the ones on the back of your deck you can daisy-chain the second amp off of the first.

Good luck with your intended install and welcome to the forum! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wave.gif.002382ce7d7c19757ab945cc69819de1.gif

sadly my amp doesnt have the preouts so it looks like i will have to get a "y adaptor" just a few quick questions...the sony amp has a "high level input" what is that used for? possibly instead of using RCA'S? and for the second amp im installing....can u use the same grounding point as the sony amp (as in put the 2nd amp ground wire on top of the sony ground wire and then bolt it back down) or will i have to use a seperate ground point for the other amp?

Exactly right. A high-level (otherwise known as speaker level/wire) input is for use with head units that have no RCA preamp outputs so you splice into the speaker wire outputs from the head unit and connect to the amp that way. When offered a choice between high-level and low-level (RCA) inputs on an amplifier the better choice will always be low-level.

As long as it is a good, solid ground connection there is no reason why not. I have both my amps and two 20-inch neon rods all gounded to the same spot via a distribution block. The main ground for my setup is spot-welded to the spare tire mount underneath the floor in my trunk (or 'boot' seeing as you're a Brit //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif) then that cable feeds the distribution block which in turn grounds all my accessories.

luvly jubly hopefully this time tomorrow my car will sound like armageddon hopfully i wont get pulled over by the police (or "cops") :p thanks mate
