I use the 9887 and its ta dopes. It doesnt have all the stuff the 7 does but it has a usb in which is also umm like ta dopes.

I have always heard pioneer eclipse and alpine are teh bests

Your choice depends on what you're looking for. That Alpine gives you a 2 band parametric EQ, basically glorified bass and treble controls. You'll have to pay for IMPRINT to unlock some other things like a 5 parametric/7 band graphic and time alignment. The ipod cable is included, the bluetooth is another 200 or 250 bucks retail.

The pioneer has built in bluetooth. I can't find too much on other features but it looks like it has a built-in 7 band and high/low pass filters. It will give you more built-in adjustability for sq purposes than the Alpine will. However I have a 980 BT and find it has less flexibility in the IPOD controls than my Alpines did in terms of how you navigate through your playlists.

Ive had issues with the bluetooth features on both depending on the phones I've had, it seems to happen that way no matter what bluetooth head unit you're dealing with. The stereo store only tells you 'bluetooth built in', not that on one phone you will get all features, on another phone you can talk through the unit but not dial, on another you may not be able to auto-connect or transfer your phone book to the head unit and dial from there.

In general Id say unless the Pioneer is ridiculously more expensive, it's probably the better 'bang for the buck' choice in this scenario. Nothing in Alpine's line other than the 9887 is really competetive with the good stuff from Pioneer and Eclipse for built-in features. With my deh 980 BT, between the built in 16 band graphic eq and time alignment as well as the crossivers and front/ rear level controls, it has made a HUGE difference in sq for me.

i dont need the bluetooth and i doubt ill use the EQ too much. I think im getting the alpine

See if you can find a good deal on the 9887 maybe on eBay. Much better unit.

I just sold my 9887, and got another 980...

I have read that if your not gonna be running active, just get the 9886 over the 9887

I dont want to pay that much, Im just going to get the 9886 and if i want to upgrade later i will. This is a beginner HU.
