Pioneer/iPod Compatibility

So a day ahead of schedule I received my shiny new

sadly because the DMV are a bunch of evil scum I won't have the car I want to install it in for another month but just for the sake of playing with it I'm thinking I'll just install it in my current car //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

but it only comes with a USB extension cable. However I have read that you have to use the special Pioneer USB/iPod cable or it won't work properly... is this true or can I just use the iPod cable that I use for my computer with no ill effects? Yeah you can just use the white cable the ipod comes with. The Pioneer ipod cable is a 'suggested' accessory, but not mandatory.
