Pioneer FHP 8000BT bluetooth problems

I just purchased this unit. The main selling feature was the built in bluetooth feature so I am pretty bummed that I can't get it to work.

I have two phones: LG8300vx and an LG Venus.

When I try to do a bluetooth search from my phone, the Pioneer shows up but here's what happens when I try to pair:

8300- Paired failed

Venus- Paired successfully but cannot connect (error message on the deck)

When I try to connect to the deck from my Venus, it says 'out of range' and 'unit powered off'.

I'm trying to get this thing working and cannot. the instruction is pretty lousy so I'm hopin' to get some help on here.

If anyone has this deck, I would appreciate the walk-through.
