pioneer avic n3

I have a question for those of you who have or have had the pioneer avic n3 headunit. The wiring harness that goes with it, there is a yellow wire for power and the black wire for the ground. Both of these wires go through a little black box that is connected to the wiring harness. My question is, what is that black box for and what does it do. I recently had a power surge go through my system and headunit and now all i have when i plug my rca in is feedback and this horrible pitching noise. Is it a filter to filter noise, and could a power surge affect it. There is also an inline fuse that goes to the power wire , but it didn't blow. So i m looking to see what that black box does and would it have anything to do with the noise that i now have coming out of my speakers. Your comments and suggestions are greatly appreiciated.

Mike
