Pioneer 80prs or something else???

just curious if you have ever had a 9887 ? if so,how does it compare in sound quality
9887 is the oldschool, 149bt is the newschool. The only reason the 9887 became obsolete is because it was known to not charge iphones, smartphones, and such. 9887 was definitely ahead of it's time though because it was practically the only single din HU at the time to run active without the need of an external processor. The only annoying thing about the 9887 is that it required the imprint tuning kit to "unlock" some tuning features, but once you have everything dialed in, there was no need for the imprint anymore. That is why the imprint kit was passed around so much from person to person. 149bt has support for the new smartphones now and of course the convenience of BT, but unfortunately alpine hasn't made any newschool HU that's active capable. They just resorted to selling you the processor instead. All in all, I would say they are both great in SQ, maybe a slight edge to the 9887 for its active capabilities but with a few annoying things you have to live with. 149bt would be the smart choice though because of all the features it comes with out of the box.

Actually the 164bt that I'm looking at is active capable. They just released it in January.

On your original post your budget is 400. That's for Hu, speakers, rear speakers, and amp? In an active setup each mid/tweeter gets there own channel, so you'd need another amp to power your rear speakers. Unless you plan on running rear aftermarket speakers off hu.

nice nice.. then what are you waiting for?! get on it! lol but seriously, get what you think will fit your situation the best. I've personally always liked the look of alpines and their SQ is definitely up to par. If you have the slightest chance that you are going to be running active one day, then go for an active capable one just in case you warm up to the idea. If you're set on passive and don't like fiddling around with controls too much, then there's plenty of other choices that will fit your needs for cheaper. Everything else is just preference really.

Yeah, going ahead and ordering the 9600. It will still sound better than anything I've ever used, can't wait to install it. If need the bump in sq I know where to upgrade. Don't think I ever will though. Or I could always run an external processor.

Well dang, I had put the order in for the 9600, was telling a buddy of mine. Now I'm getting the Alpine 164 because of the discount he gets. He's helping me out, couldn't pass up that deal... So I will have the option to run active. Or at least try it.

So now have to get amazon to cancel the order for the other one I ordered. Glad it's the weekend and hasn't shipped yet.

My favorite thing about the DEH-80PRS is blackout mode. After a few seconds of inactivity, every single light on the unit will go out. Every head unit should have this feature as an option.

Well that was random. Did you read the whole thread? I went with an alpine a couple months ago.

I've tested the 80PRS with an o-scope and the bluetooth is nice and clean, just not much range. I can turn my phone all the way up, then back it down one, and my phone is no longer clipping, the 80PRS, can go all the way to full volume and never clips. This head unit only starts clipping when you start turning up the gain on the lows and turning up the eq.
