i have a toshiba laptop that gets maybe 40 minutes off the battery before its less than 10% battery life, its not even a year old, my dad and brother both have toshiba laptops that last about the same which sucks, i had a hp laptop for about 3 years and the battery life NEVER got lower that 1 and half hours, close to 2 if i was lucky, anyway my aunt just got a mac book pro and that thing lasted from like 8 to 1130 or so last night before i had to plug it up, if nothing else the battery life is appealing to me on a mac, any reason why windows based laptops are so bad with battery? i know the macs and pcs both used lithium based batterys and i just dont see how mac can get such much time out of theirs compared to other companys, any idea of what i can do to?

Her mac book pro doesn't have a removable battery. Also her screen is LED backlit which uses less power. With a non-removable battery and unibody design of the case, Apple was able to pack more battery internally than traditional external type.

Because your toboshi cost $400 and her macbook cost $1500.

Just because it says 'lithium ion' on it doesn't mean its equal to all other lithium ion batteries.

Your basically saying " my sony xploid system sounds like crap and my friend's JL system sounds so much better, wtf? we both have 1000w amps and 12'' subs"

Tobishi uses cheap *** batteries in their laptops. You might be able to buy a respectable battery somewhere that will fit, it should cost you at least $100.

Mac, like JL, jacks their prices way the **** up. Its sort of like how crutchfield marks their prices ABOVE retail/MSRP.

Not only do different laptop companies use different batteries, but different laptop models are equipped with different batteries.

Its one of the reasons why those $1500 laptops with seemingly the same features as a $500 laptop cost so much more.

With lower end models, they crap down on a few things. cheap battery, cheap screen, cheap case, cheap harddrive. They use crappier parts to bring down the cost to appeal to the 'lower' end of the market.

Another point is; Mac is an operating system, which is made by apple. Mac does not make computers, APPLE makes computers. Apple makes their computers with the Mac OS (you can install windows or linux if you wish)

Apple uses great components, has pretty good quality control, and has a great warranty.

HOWEVER, some of the components they use are the same components that are found in other computers.

Assuming for this example that an i5 processor is an i5 processor is an i5 processor; Apple will charge you $500 for the part. HP will charge you $400 for the part. a computer store will charge you $300.

The point you should learn is, Apple charges a higher premium for their products.

Personally, I would never buy a macbook. I would of course use it if I got one for free (or if I got one at a HUGE discount). But I wouldn't buy one at Apple's price.

If for some reason you enjoy the Mac os, you can buy a 'windows' PC and just install the Mac os on it. Very simple.

A crappy company would select a cheap crappy harddrive. Lets say a samsung 80gb 5400rpm harddrive.

A better company would select a better harddrive for its computers. Lets say a seagate 80gb 5400 rpm harddrive.

The seagate is of better quality than the samsung, although they will perform basically the same, the seagate will probably last longer.

The crappier company will be able to charge a lower price because of their crappy components.

The better company will have to charge a higher price. The better company will probably charge a higher premium, because they're known to be a better company, and they can, and they want your money.

Cliffs:

apple has jacked up prices.

Your better off buying an ASUS or DELL studio.

cheap computers are just that; cheap.

very nifty, one why no other laptop can be like these
The 'adaptive technology' seems pretty nice. However, I strongly doubt their figures. Laptops get quite hot. Heat is the main entity that damages a batteries life. It is far more damaging than simple recharges.

In an effort to dwarf the standard figures, I'd bet apple neglected to warrant a standard testing temperature. I don't have any of the new macbooks, but my friend's macbook pro runs quite hot.

Theres even a legal brief at the bottom of the page disclaiming their statements accuracy concerning battery life.

There are laptops available with permanent batteries. However, I wouldn't buy one. They have more heat issues, (which means a shorter life), and they're not as easily replaced.

You can't disconnect the battery in order to use the laptop plugged in. You can't upgrade the battery either.

If you take a look at hp's website and customize a laptop, you'll see options for various different battery sizes. You have a choice if you'd like one that has a higher capacity (heavier) or ones with lower capacities (lighter).

EDIT: the new site design automatically inserts ads on website addresses?

I'm getting 7-8 hours that the OP is stating on my Mac Book Pro and I'm loving it. I'm not feeling excessive heat from the unibody. The whole unit is made out of a chunk of aluminum which makes it a big heat sink. If I can feel the heat, that means it working on effectively moving heat from the inside to the outside. No other companies can do what apples does because of R&D, intellectual properties, and patent holdings.

Changing a few components or the simple layout of transistors is legally a completely new product/patent.
