passive radiator questions

passive radiators function as a port, but instead of using a hole in the box you use a speaker with no motor. The biggest advantage is that they take up no room in the box so tuning low in small enclosures becomes possible where a port might have to be mounted externally. They also will not suffer from port compression, you simply have to make sure you have enough excursion/cone area worth of passive radiation. Usually you aim for 2x the surface area of the subs. To change tuning on a passive radiator you add mass to it to change the fs of the driver, volume of the box also plays a role as well. That's off the top of my head for more go to: http://www.aespeakers.com/PRFAQ.php

We build and sell passive radiators geared for high performance car audio applications for PSI Car Audio and on http://www.fixmyspeaker.com

Here's a big thread at our forum about it - http://www.caraudioclassifieds.org/forum/showthread.php?t=21027
