Opinions on Waves MaxxBass 103??

Yeah, the "reviews" posted on the website looked more like ads to me... and their claims seem VERY overblown. But, the idea behind it seems to make sense, and their name/technology was found all over google on professional sound editing related websites.

The MaxBass technology is going to be in the upcoming Xbox 5.1 surround sound system by Spherex Inc. (http://www.spherexinc.com/home.asp)

So, maybe I'll have to wait for those to be released and try them out in the store to see how they sound.

I think it would be mostly worthless for Subs... but may be worthwhile to add to a set of 6.5 components to get a little deeper sound out of them.

i'm using one right now, and i think its great. i didnt know what to think at first, but when the local shop installed it in a car with aftermarket speakers and no sub, i was amazed. i'm not sure how its done, but it certainly sounds like its playing my components a lot deeper.

so why not just turn the bass up on the HU right? tried that, figured thats all this thing is doing, its not. turning up the bass will make my HEX's crackle and pop, but if i turn the bass down, and turn the maxxbass up, the components come to life, my **** door panels rattle for god sakes!!

i was impressed, but its pricey, i believe $300 retail.

have yet to try it on my sub, but i also have a feeling that its a waste.

edit, i guess its $240 according to the website, i didnt know, didnt pay for mine yet //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif but for $240, its looking a lot better, i think at $200, this unit is a great buy and people will eat it up.

Warning: I've never used this device.

I really don't think that the maxxbass toy will make a differance in a properly set up system. Besides, who wants to add junk to their signal like that ?

I think there is a lot of 'stealth' marketing going on for this device.
That should tell you alot.

Stealth marketing, maybe?, surly the company that makes this product , Waves Inc. is a stealth company!

You all have not heard of Waves ( http://www.waves.com) but they have been the de facto standard for audio processors in all the recording studios. they are a very high end company and I guess they now made the leap to car sound.

I have not heard the MaxxBass box for the car, but I used to work in a recording studio and we used their tools all the time.

I doubt a recording studio would use signal processors like the bass maxx....

i went to the review page and looked at the first review PDF that said TUCKER or some magazine... and the pictured unit was just the knob from this bassmaxx thing, but it sais PrecisionPower all over it with the red lightning bolt...

is this a DEI product\company?

The Maxxbass isn't a DEI product, but I believe PPI is trying to come out with a product comparable to the MaxxBass unit. Basically PPI rebadged the Wave Maxxbass unit from the looks of it.

The Maxxbass unit "works" on the theory that fundamentals are just as important to sound perception as the original frequency itself. So, it takes a bass frequency (say, 40hz), and reproduces it an octave higher (80hz). Since it takes less excursion for your speaker to play 80hz than it does 40hz, you (are supposed to) get the "perception" of the 40hz signal with less stress (and less excursion) from your speakers. I've read mixed opinions on it. I haven't heard it personally, but from the sources I've read you can definitely tell a difference from when it is on and off..........whether or not that difference is good or bad is subjective.

On subs I think it would be utterly useless since they were designed to play those frequencies. Just another thing to screw up your signal chain.
