One $3-400 sub or a pair of $1-200 subs?

Other than sheer output, and with a high end sub compared to a pair of budget subs that probably won't be very different either, I would challenge you to tell the difference between the sound of one vs. two subs.
I'm sure there are setups where it wouldn't make a huge difference. However, in my setups, I've always preferred dual sub setups. In my single cab Toyota, 1 good sub probably wouldn't have made a noticeable difference due to the very small cab. However, I tried 1 12" in my Tahoe and it just didnt' work out for me. 2 12s did a much better job filling that big cab. I'm going to play with my 2 12" L7s for a little while. Later on, if I need to gain more cargo room, I may consider going with a 15" Mag or something similar. I anticipate there will come a time when I know longer want to sacrifice the space that I currently am with this 6 ft^3 ported enclosure for the L7s.

Your results I would guarantee have nothing to do with anything more than output and the increased efficiency afforded by a doubling of cone area. It is not a product of a dual sub setup per se, just more cone area.

So what kind of setup do you suggest for a 98 TA hatchback for under $500 (subs alone, you can answer amps in the amp section where I posted another thread)? Thus far the general concensus seems to be an IDMAX, Flatline, or Magnum...?

I completely agree with that. However, it's tough to double your cone area unless you have a dual sub setup. Even if you go from 1 12" to 1 15", you haven't doubled your cone area. 2 12"s will have more cone area than 1 15". However, I definitely agree that there will be far less difference between 1 15" and 2 12"s than there would be between 1 12" and 2 12"s.

I think we're both arguing pretty much the same point, we're just going about it in different ways.

Any suggestions on an SQL sub then? That excludes AQ, DD etc., looking for something musical, this car won't be used at any competitions, strictly daily driven.
PS IDMAX in the avatar pic? How do you like it?
I got a great idea. How about you check the July '05 issue of CA&E magazine. Hmm, I think that's the one where they compared the 10W6v2, IDMax 10", RF T310 and the DD 3510. Yep, the horrible sounding, SPL only DD compared to all those. It was supposed to be a $400.00 retail cap comparison, so the RF should not have really been there....but hey, what the hell. It's amazing how after you read the write up of the DD......how the numbers in the end don't quite add up to what they were saying about it. An even better idea would be to call up the folks that did the test and ask them in person what they thought about the sub...since it wouldn't be on the record or published in a magazine that all the other boys advertise heavily in. Here is the link if you want to know what the outcome was, since it's obvious that, miraculously, you haven't read that issue.

Nothing against DD, I have a pair of AQ SD2.5's coming in for a friend very soon, its just that I don't have space to go ported and it would be a waste to put DD/AQ subs in a sealed setup when they are meant for ported apps.

I didn't want to budge in on this guy's thread but I can do 1.2 cu ft per sub...I was leaning towards a pair of subs because I have a carPC in the middle of the trunk with access to its DVD through the center armrest, but I figured if its really worth getting one better sub I could remote-mount the DVD in the glovebox if I can get a really long IDE extension cable..

I saw a few people on here saying that it would be better to do with 2 12's, because you get a more full sound.

Here is what I have noticed just based on expieriance.

In my mustang, I have had plenty of dual 12, and single 12 setups. I will agree that, in certain applications, going with 1 12, will not give you as full of a sound, as going with 2. When I had the 2 12 inch mags firing into the cabin, it sounded great, but when I took one of them away, and only had the one behind the passengers seat going, it didn't sound as full to me. So in that instance, the 1 12, didn't sound as good to me as 2. But that was with both 12's facing the cabin and sealed.

Now when I had the single mag 12 ported in the back of my mustang, facing the rear of my car. I didn't have that problem at all. The single 12 ported, not firing into the cabin, sounded very full, and even though it was only 1 12, it still sounded as if it was coming from all parts of the rear of the car.

Basically, the only times I have ever noticed it being a problem in a car, is when you have a single 12 sealed, and facing forward. I am pretty certain that in any car with 1 12, you will be able to get a VERY nice full sound. You just have to do good job installing it, and know how subs sound in your car/truck.
