One $3-400 sub or a pair of $1-200 subs?

I am trying to build a system for my beloved ride, but I haven't been in the car audio scene for about a decade & am lost. I have been researching subs & have seen that most people go with pairs of subs in that $75 to $150 range, rather than getting a single $200-300 or so sub.

I was wondering which would actually give me better performance in my car. I plan on using an Alpine flip out for my HU, possibly some nice Quart or Focal components for my mains up front, and then the subs in the back. Then I plan to add speakers as I go in the rear side panels & maybe another sub if I only get the one more expensive one.

PLEASE make some suggestions about specific models because I don't pretend to know anything at this point. Let's put it this way, the Hifonics Zeus models were in their initial ad campaign, and probably their initial launch model, back when I was into car audio before.

What are you looking for. SPL, SQL, or SQ?

I'm looking for accuracy, but I want it/them to be able to thug out on demand...so I'm not sure which that falls into...but I'm guessing SQL?

Yeah but can I fit a 15" sub in the back of a 1998 Pontiac TransAm? And how well would a 15" handle my favorite rock bands like Tool, Korn, etc? Oh, and wth is a Mag? lol Yeah I'm a born again noob to car audio. I do appreciate the fact this forum is active, & thanks for the tips guys.

Oh and how much are these Flatlines I keep seeing everyone talk about?

The benefits of a one sub setup are:

You can spend all the $$$ on one sub and get a higher quality sub

You use a lot less space

You can usually get away with a smaller and therefore less expensive amp

The benefits of a dual sub setup:

More cone area = more air moved

Properly setup, you'll get a "fuller" sound

Stereo Integrity makes a line of subwoofers called Magnums.... they are simply works of art (going from what people say, soon to have a pair of 15s) and yes it will keep up with that type of music and any others you may throw at it

a mag is basically the closest sub to God himself. it gets fukin loud, and sounds great doing it. from what i gather, they prefer decent sized boxes, but you can seal them up in a realitively small box too and it will still sound good.

Hell yeah you can fit a 15" in the back of a ***** Am!
Although I think a mullet would fit better!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/peace.gif.2db28b618ed8d1964ebbe2f5021d2c39.gif
LOL!!!!

I am thinking I could use the well as a sort of enclosure & dynamat it really well, but I am wondering how good a platform top built into the well would hold up when I start thuggin out. Maybe I could figure out a way to put some latches on it or just load it up with dynamat. I really don't know, but putting a nice 15" like that in there would be nice. Any ideas?

Hey guy,

I think he may be a perfect cadidate for one of those new SI BM series subs. The 12 would be under his budget, and still would be a very nice Sql driver. Just something to lok into.
