Old vs. New

I fully agree with this idea whole heartedly except for a few bands:

Nirvana, Alice N Chains, The Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers (they've been around since the early 80's yes but still). Those are the bands I can think off hand that have created a huge impact on the music scene. Hell, Nirvana created a new genre.

Music isn't what it used to be but there is no doubt about that but there are bands that are still very creative. I actually watched a very pleasant documentary on Tom Petty the other day on Sundown(4 hour documentary mind you) and it was incredible. Also the video brought up a good point, it referenced something along the lines of this: "if you think about all the great musicians that have come about they have either lost a mother, lost a mother and father, or been abused." Which actually I found that rather interesting because the guy listed off a handful of people easily.

You've been coming up with some good threads here lately btw. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif

Sure, there are talented musicians now, but I just haven't heard anything that takes me on a musical journey quite like classic rock does.
the only band that EVER took me on a musical journey was Pink Floyd. It was if time dropped you off somewhere, spun you around a bit into a blissful, magical world, and then dropped you back off at your seat.

I 100% disagree, there were just as many shitty bands and shitty songs 30+ years ago, but they haven't withstood the test of time and no one remembers them. 30 years from now the shit of today will be gone and people will be saying the same thing about the music then comparing it to bands like Tool, NIN, Rage and the like. You also mention great musicians at individual instruments, well they exist still, I'd put Danny Carey from Tool up with Bonham and better than Pert anyday, I'd put Tom Morello up with Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, for just sheer all around talent Trent Reznor is near the top. Today has musicians and music that is just as good and it will be remembered that way in 30 years.

agreed pink floyd rocks my socks off.

i mean right now im listening to Derek and the Dominoes, and "Layla and Other Assorted love songs" is IMO one of the greatest cd's ever recorded. compare music like that to Panic at the Disco (staying somewhat within the same genre) its no comparison.

I've also had a Jimmy Buffet cd in my player for the last 2 weeks constantly listening to it. never gets old

And then the 80's happened. WTF. There was a little good stuff here and there in the 80's, but with the advent of pop... bam. All gone. The 90s had the occasional catchy song, and now, music seems like it's just gone down the hole.
my friend...the 80's was the time of metal! oh great beautiful metal. DIO ftw

i somewhat agree with you. however compared to the classic rock era, there arent as many bands within the 90's and millennium that stood out. the only ones i can come to the top of my dome are Sublime and... well sublime lol maybe Rage

edit: and RHCP

if you want current individual musicians, Dream theater/Liquid tension experiment > All other musicians

what? Are you serious? So you are saying there are people who have impacted musicians today, wrote amazing music today like: muddy waters, eric clapton, jimi hendrix, the beatles, aerosmith, The Who, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Frank Zappa, The Eagles, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Randy Rhoads, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan?

No sir......I think not. No one will ever, ever ever ever forget Pink Floyd. I guarantee that. I seriously have not heard music made today that touches those people besides the bands I listed above(in my first quote). Sure there are bands who have made some great music and had some talent but they haven't made the impact in the music scene like those listed in this quote.

Bob Dylan?
**dry heaves** :p i dont like his music at all lol

indeed. one of the greatest bands of all time. Musical geniouses.

my friend...the 80's was the time of metal! oh great beautiful metal. DIO ftwJimmy Buffet is fun to listen to lol. I think that's all that kept me sane this summer while I was working a horridly boring job. I completely agree that stuff like Panic at the Disco is worthless. I'm not too keen on metal. I dunno why.
haha yea i love his lyrics, and like you said, its just FUN //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i love metal...my favorite genre. no other genre can induce the kind of aggression metal can induce. Its not safe when you are in traffic listening to metal. I go crazy

edit: also dont forget about hte 80's: Rock LOBSTER! the birth of indie

I agree, music back then was awesome, I listen to Pink Floyd and am taken to another world, but I listen to Tool or A Perfect Circle or NIN and it does the same for me. Its different though because the bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, The Doors, Led Zeppelin et al. influenced these current bands, so while these current bands may not be breaking ground per se, their music is still just as moving and amazing as those previous bands imo.

Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are definitely my favorite bands. But seriously, what ever happened to music being an art form. Something that could be interpreted multiple ways and still having meaning to everyone. Nothing particular magical about "Then Super Man Dat Hoe, Now Watch Me Do, (Crank Dat Soulja Boy), Now Watch Me yua!"

Dream Theater is amazing as well, I forgot them.

oh I missed this part I jumped the gun. I thought you were saying the music back in the day was sh1t. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Yes I will agree that Tool, and A Perfect Circle bring very very strong emotional ties to things in my life. I'm typing this as I'm listening to APC - Orestes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I agree, there are the shitty bands/"musicians" like that who will be forgotten in 5 years and then theres the Tools, NINs, Mars Voltas, APCs, Dream Theaters who will be remembered 30 years from now just as fondly as we look back on the Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd era. I also have to throw another band out there that absolutely amazes me, The Moody Blues, I listen to "In Search of the Lost Chord" and am absolutely mesmerized.
