Old foxbody Mustangs... How are they?

For the 2 valve 4.6L V8:

1996-1997 Ford Mustang, 215 hp (160 kW) and 285 lb·ft (386 N·m)

1998 Ford Mustang, 225 hp (168 kW) and 290 lb·ft (393 N·m)

1999-2004 Ford Mustang, 260 hp (194 kW) and 302 lb·ft (409 N·m)
The 4 valve motors went in the SVT Cobra from 96-04 which has a ton more horsepower, between 305-390 depending on the year.

As of 2008 the Windsor engines including the 351 and 302 are still being produced by Ford, available as complete crate motors, from Ford Racing and Performance Parts.

In 1986, Ford released the first multiport fuel-injected 302 CID (4.9 L) V8, rated at 200 hp (150 kW).
For 1987, the Mustang received E7 heads and a more capable intake manifold. Power ratings jumped to 225 hp (168 kW) and 300 ft·lbf

From a guy who has owned a 93, 94, and 00 and built 5 others(3 5.0, 2 4.6) its all about how you build them and what you want.

93 is lighter but is not as stiff(notch is close) and if you are a good scavenger/mechanic you can make a lot of power because the electronics are easily tuned/hacked/chipped and there are a ton of easy EFI systems or you can go carb.

94-95 5.0 is a stiffer chassis and better brakes and interior but the rest is same as above.

96-97 4.6 is junk and stay away unless it already has the PI heads and intake.

98 a little better motor

99-to this gen is a badass car that can make a ton of power with just a blower, exhaust and the right tune

And for the LS1:

The LS1 shares little other than similar displacement, external dimensions, and rod bearings, with the earlier small-block V8 engines. It is an all-aluminum 5.7 L (346 in³) pushrod engine and was rated between 305 - 350 hp (227 to 261 kW) and 335-365 ft·lbf

The modular 4.6 is a solid power plant, all of you haters just love push rod motors too much. But keep in mind Im puttin a 5.7 in my s-10 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

i had an 82 hatchback with a bored out 5.0 and that p.o.s. aluminum 4 speed that ford put it in that year...the car was a **** monster but i went thru 3 transmissions in the short time that i had it...it's sittin in my grandpa's shop now, i blew the motor by over reving it. now that they make stud girdles for the 5.0 i might look into rebuilding it again...maybe this time make it into a bracket racer

as i said before i have had{built a bunch} i was just saying that the 4 valve is badass! when some on here say is a trash motor thats all. my last pushrod motor was a 308 with aluminum brodix heads custom cam d.s.s. botom end and and 150 of the spray with 3.73 and it would not run with my 4 valve!

I had a 91 LX convertible, mild mods, 3.73 gears, Hooker shorty headers with a full Dynomax exhaust, cats deleted of course, K&N cold air kit, upgraded clutch and transmission, and it would eat up the Camaros. Not all of them, there are some sick LS1's out there, but there wasnt any GM cars with the same mods that could beat that Stang. A friend of mine has a "Street" car with nitrous and all the works, and a turbo car that runs 130mph in the 1/8th mile. There is an ocean of aftermarket parts for them out there.
