1980 - the best yr 4 cars
Hi all, i have a 1980 Volkswagen Polo 895cc (or to those of you from the US a 1980 Volkswagen Rabit).

I was given this car for free, its done a genuine 26K MPH (40K KPH U.S/Europe) in 26 years, i have:

A Pair of Mutant X 6x9 500W 200W RMS

2nd Hand Pioneer DEH-890 CD Tuner/MP3/CD-R 30W RMS

Pioneer DEH-890 Spec Label

To give u an idea of how old my car is:

The original Wiring & Headunit looks as such:

Original Wiring 1

Original Wiring 2

Original Wiring 3

Now the Headunit ive just got (the pioneer) came with extra wires, which i presume most of are for connecting the likes of an amp / subs e.t.c..

Pioneer Headunit Wiring

See Here Extra Wires

The car has no previous wiring around the car as it only had 1 8W speaker located at the bottom of the headunit compartment, i have installed my 6x9 & rear deck, disconnected the original speaker and ran the wires underneith the carpet and seats to the front, all i need to do is to succesfully install this headunit and then connect my speakers up to it.

- The headunits speaker cable is an input/output white/red audio/video cable and i have wired the ends of my two 6x9s with the relevant wires so that they will fit.

Any help would be really appreciated, for instance a "MS Paint" arrows from 1 wire to another.. would be good //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif lol

Thanks in advance guys.

P.s my car.. it was free //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif and its in perfect condition + its cheapest car 2 insure in UK (UK Insurance is v.expensive)

That extra wiring is the wiring harness to connect your factory wiring to. So pretty much you are gonna have to run new wires off of the Pioneer wiring harness. I'm at school currently so I can explain later before work unless someone else does it before me.

I just realized that your HU is a European model only. I have yet to ever see one over here. So I'm not sure what wires are what for your 890. Read your manual on the wire colors. I tihnk I have the general idea of what wire does what but just want to make sure.

I'm still saying you are prolly gonna have/need to run all new wires from that wiring harness. But I don't know. I will see what other people think...

The black and green wires...where do they go? Grounds I'm gonna guess. The brown/red ones for the single speaker?

Yes the black i believe is the 12v power, and the green is definately ground.

The brown and red cables i have no idea what they are for, as in the pictures you can see that there is some black wire which has some Red connectors half way through it, the other end of those connected to the Positive(+) & Negative(-) of the original speaker.

Those Black wires then go straight into the back of the headunit, (you should be able to see a black casing in the back of the headunit in the 2nd photo of the original wiring, in this plastic case there are three singular wires (but the plastic casing just holds them together nicely).

To make things easier than trying to understand my descriptions, here is a diagram to show you what the original wiring does / is:

Do you have a volt ohm meter digital or analog doesn't matter?

I would test with light or meter the black wire with inline fuse going to white into factory plug I think that may be ignition wire or accessory power. I personally would not worry about the speaker wires already there just leave them.. and run new wire to yout 6x9s.

ok, well i have a voltage meter and have turned the ignition on and measured the Voltage of each black wire (as to determine Positive or Negative, which i now know, hence i have connected my two 6x9s..

so thats not the problem the problem is that i have a modern Panasonic DEH-890 CD Tuner / Radio that has different connections, i do not have the manual for either the original radio or the new cd tuner, hence i have a problem with, when i disconnect my old original radio headunit i will not know what i connect from the Original headunit (old basic wiring) to the new cd tuner headunit which has all the ISO connecters and such on it..

i do not unforunately know enough to determine this myself, i was wondering if people could help me with regards to what wires are which on the new headunit, ie match them up via comparing the two pictures of the new wires which came with the new headunit to the old wiring which is still in place and i cannot really replace.. so that i can connect the right wires together so that my headunit is installed..

thats all.. lol

oh and my headunit is rated 4-8ohm and my 6x9s are 150W RMS @ 4ohms if that helps - doubt it.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

"pimp" ?

Its a Mark 1 1979 Volkswagen Polo L 895cc, its in mint condition and at the time was the "top of the range version with all the extras" haha

Took some T-Cut to it, and its still got its original factory colour as its been garaged for the last 26 years whilst in use.

Anyway, anyone wanna help me? :p

sorry, i no wat ya meant, bit tired //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

No soz, dont know anyone by that alias, new 2 forumz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Ok if you take your meter and test the wires, leave the key out of the ignition and test for a constant 12v+. Connect that wire to the Yellow wire coming from that "extra wiring harness" you have. Then using your meter, test for the accesory wire. To do this, turn the key to the "on" position(whichever position turns the factory radio on) and find a wire that reads 12v. Then turn the key back off and see if the voltage drops to 0. In an old car like that there may not even be a switched 12v+ wire but your new radio needs one. . If you find one in the original wiring, connect to to the Red wire coming from the "extra wiring harness". Connect the black wire coming from the "extra wiring harness" to ground. The blue wire coming from the extra wiring harness is your remote wire in case ever want to add an amplifier. Tape off the orange wires, you dont need to hook those up. Then the other 4 pairs of wires are your speaker wires. Solid wires are +, ones with a stripe are negative.

*if you didnt find an accesory wire (switched 12v+, turns on the radio and other electronics in car that need to be on when the key is in the "on" positon)in the original factory wiring you're going to need to run a new one to the radio from the ignition harness. The accesory wire in your igntion harness is black/yellow according to DEI techsoft which is usually extremely accurate, but you should check just in case, especially since its an old car. Locate the igntion harness(up under the steering column, a bunch of large guage wires. Test the black/yellow wire, it should read 0 volts with the key out of the ignition and 12v when then key is in the "on" position. Connect the red wire on the new radio to the black/yellow wire in your ignition harness. Make sure you install an inline fuse on this new wire for safety.
