Okay I need some help, hint *JimJ*

You rang, snookums? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

How much are you willing to spend? That's going to determine...well, a lot //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Also, do you currently have any gear with a phono preamp? That'll get you going and save you money to start out with, if you get into it more (read: obsessed) you can upgrade to a seperate phono preamp at a later point.

Har har...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

If a "few hundred bucks" goes up to $299, the choice is a no-brainer...

Project Debut III. Basically a Music Hall MMF-2.1 except with a cartridge that's actually worth listening to. Hell of a first 'table, it should last you a while.

If $299 is too expensive, go to flea markets, Craiglist, Ebay, yard sales...Good names include Rega, Thorens, Acoustic Research, SME, Linn, etc. I'd stay away from tables with an automatic tonearm return - just something else to break and cause problems. Also, stay away from cheaper direct-drive 'tables. A good direct drive 'table needs to be pretty beefy, and that's not likely to be found for $100.

You're going to need a seperate phono preamp, which isn't that expensive - used, you can find one for $50-$100. Radio Shack used to sell a decent one for $40. You need to match the preamp to the cartridge you get - stick with "MM" ("moving magnet") cartridges for now, unless you buy a used table with who knows what on it.

Hope this helps...

You need a phono pre, and a player. I'd really suggest you find something REAL cheap for starters to get your feet wet. Then you can go crazy some day and buy the Caliburn Continuum table for $90,000 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Rega players are pretty nice for the money. Not sure what some of them go for but I have played with them in a local audio shop I visit regularly. When I finish college I plan on starting my record collection....

I thought about going the Rega route with a P2, but the battlecruiser-esque SL-1200MK2 was too tempting to pass up //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif 30lbs. of turntable...bouf hanz

There's a shop relatively close to here selling a hot-rodded Planar 3 that I want to hear sometime. No doubt the Rega tonearms are some of the best in the world, even if the rest of the 'table is dainty //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I heard a setup a few days ago and am now in love with Vinyl. Everything seemed more "alive."
I remember switching from vinyl to CD in 1983 {maybe 1984} and Everything seemed more "alive."

.. lol ...
Ha.

It just had a different sound to it. I liked it a lot.

I guess alive was probably the wrong word to use, but it has a different sound. Warmer maybe? Im not sure how to describe it.
