Ok somebody school me!!!!!

I have an old soundstream reference 500s and a newer Memphis prx500.1. Why does the old soundstream blow the fuses instead of clipping like the Memphis? It seems like the soundstream will just keep pumping power out until it blows the fuses. The Memphis hits a wall and goes to clipping. What's the deal with this?

Old school reference 500s it sounds great just starts pulling more amps then it's fused for. The Memphis will start clipping before its maxed out. It's like the soundstream has no top end it just keeps putting out the more you turn it up, until it blows the fuses. If you watch Steve meads video on YouTube on the soundstream class a5.0 he blows fuses also.

My guess -- SS is just way over-built, and probably does produce a good bit more than rated power.

If it's rated for 500 but probably built for 600+ and the fuses are actually there for over-current "protection" vs protection against catastrophic meltdown.

Before the SS fuse blows it's probably going to sound pretty clean at 600 or 700w , while the Memphis hits the 500w range and the power supply starts to fade, it clips.

phss...overbuilt. Compared to some of today's amps, they're built to last.

I'm betting your pushing that SS 500s so much that your expecting it out of it and the amp is basically saying "i'm calling it quits". 500 watts is just that....and isn't much compared to today. I'd say use or sell another amp that's rated 2 x the power if your wanting more.

what impedance load? it's likely that you are giving the SS a lower ohm load that it can't source enough current for while the newer Memphis is hitting the voltage rail limitations.

it just simply means the SS has higher voltage rails.

It does it on a 2ohm and 1ohm mono loads (sub duty). It's just crazy that it will just keep pumping out power and blows the fuses before clipping. And yeah I do need a bigger amp this is just a spare. I'm gonna give it some 1/0 wiring and see if it will pump out power without blowing fuses. It's just one of those curiosity things lol. And n2audio the Memphis just taps out and goes to clipping.

Without being there my two guesses would be as follows. Either you are running too low of an impedance on the soundstream, which it will do for a while, or, more likely, your voltage is dropping enough to blow the fuses.
