Ok guys, have it this problem/stumper!!

I had JL Audio Coaxils running off my Alpine HU in my car. They had no bass whatsover in them, and when i tried sending bass through them, they distorted like crazy. Crossover was at like 100hz. Well, i sold them to my friend (who happens to have the same exact car as me) and he is running them off his Factory HU. I heard them today, and they sound COMPLETELY different, they have tons and tons of bass, so much that they rattle stuff in his car. He just mounted them to the door metal, no fancy install or anything. And before you guys say my install is bad, i had these same speakers in a Nissan Maxima w/ the same Alpine HU and they sounded like shit too. How is this possible? This HU sounded like it does from day 1, is it defective or something? Right now i have amped CDT's and I have the same "no bass" problem, is this just completely a HU issue?

Umm no, ive experimented at all my HU crossovers, (80, 100, 120, 160). At 80 it just distorts and sounds like garbage, at 100 they sound fine but have literlly no audible bass frequencies coming out of them. Ive also had 3 different sets of speakers on this HU (2 were amped by the HU, currents are amped by an external speaker amp) and all have had the same problem. All 3 speakers have sounded extremely harsh as well. Its either some wierd wiring issue or a HU issue, but no one has ever been able to tell me.

Could i have some weird defect in my HU responsible for this? Everything in my original system has been changed except for the HU, and lo and behold, still experiencing the no bass and extreme harshness.

i actually haven't gotten them installed yet (**** toyota has to have factory 6.75" openings in the front doors rather than everyone else 6.5"-ers) so im ordering some adapters tonight...

No offense, but do you ever not have a problem with equipment? Also you need to search man, 2 threads a day and 25 posts w/ just questions. ITS ALL IN THE INSTALL. how much bass do you expect to have running speakers off your deck? Also when you get the bump you want are you gonna be willing to deaden your doors?

Dude, they aren't running off the HU, they are running off my eD Nine.2 amplifier. And my friend's JL coaxils running off his headunit have like 20x more bass output than my CDT's running off the amp. Its not deadening, that would help, but its not gonna magically add lower frequencies to the speakers to play.

I don't use the amp crossover, i use the HU crossover, its set at 80hz. The next level is 120hz and thats too high. Keep in mind there is midbass, just not alot to sound sufficient with no sub. My friend using my old speakers off his head unit had enough bass to sound fine without a sub. Mine sounds like its missing a ton of lower frequencies. He also has the EXACT same car as me (F-body) with no sound deadening.
