Well hello everyone. I guess ill do my introduction here. I am new to this forum but not to new with car audio. I have been a car audio nut ever since i got my drivers liscence. Right now i own a 2001 Ford ZX2 which for those that dont know is the 2 door version of the escort. I am seriously considering installing new hardware in the car as when it was all first installed it was kind of "thrown together". The car currently has a lower end alpine head unit, a par of S-type 6.5 inch speakers in the front doors, a pair of S-type 5x7 inch speakers in the rear deck. These speakers are powered by Alpine's MRV-F545 (yes i know way overpowered!) The amp was basically an after thought. For the low end i have a single interfire 12 inch powered by an old profile california.

Basically i am currently unhappy with the way my system sounds as a whole. My biggest concern is my sub. Its old and was a cheapy to begin with. At the time all of this was done i had a very low income as i was in school at the time.

What i am looking for tho is a good quality sub that can get loud no questions asked plus good sound quality. I have toyed around with getting a pair of 10s or 12s. I am still undecided at this point. I have looked into the Image Dynamics , JL, Diamond, Memphis, etc. Up until now all of my subs have been in ported enclosures. My current enclosure for my sub is too big. The trunk space in an escort, as you can imagine, is pretty limited. So i am looking at possibly getting into sealed boxes. I could go ported if need be tho Also i will need a new amp as well. Obviously the old profile wont hardly power anything much more than 6x9s these days lol.

Price at this point i really dont want to spend more than 300-400 on the sub. The amp i am not sure on as if it is a good unit i will probably pay for whatever they want for it. So with all of this info can some of you guys help me out? I appreciate you taking the excruciating time to read my novel and thank you in advance for all of your help and suggestions!

Jeremy

Yes i need help choosing subs and an amp for my car. I drive an escort. Thinking about a pair of 10s or 12s.Possibly sealed. I listen to rock. Does this help any?

Give a good budget that includes the sub and the amp so people can put together a good combo for you. Decide on the amount of sub/s you want first and what enclosure type you want. Do you prefer ported or sealed? What is more important to you, sound quality or spl (volume level)? I like ported and always go with one sub that is the biggest that I can fit and look for one that has decent to good sound quality to boot. If you're looking to spend $300-$400 alone on just a sub, you're aiming on the mid-higher end of the spectrum for something used on this forum. That should definitely satisfy you.

There are lots of good choices. One sub that is popular on the forum right now for sounding nice, not needing a ton of power to sound good, and not costing an arm and a leg is the FI Q series. Brand new they aren't even that expensive. Just google fi car audio. Get whatever size you are comfortable with and decide on running it ported or sealed. Once you have that decided, you can ask about enclosures and an amp that will work well with it. If you get the BP power option (which allows it to handle around 500 more watts rms or so I have heard and highly recommend), you can run a bit larger amp to it.

If you get a dual 2 ohm sub, you could wire it in parallel and run it at 1 ohm. Look for a class d mono amp that puts out around 1,200 to 1,500 watts rms at 1 ohm. And you should have a decent setup easily in your budget. I would suggest looking for used amps on this forum or ebay if you want a good deal. If you are also on a budget there, I have heard some good things about the Hifonics Brutus series. Maybe a Brutus BXI1208d would pair nicely with one of those subs with the BP option. You could probably use a BXI1608D, too if you adjust the gain knob appropriately. Just my 2 cents.

If you want to try something different, this deal is tough to beat:

I have had elemental designs products before and have had no problems. I would have gone with this setup, but I needed something bigger and bought a 21" Incriminator Audio Death Penalty. Incriminator Audio also has gotten some good reviews and it is a small company that you can speak with Nick (the owner) directly if you need help/advice.

12" FI Q, get a very nicely designed enclosure for that sub, in that car i heard sub up, port up, and it was loud off 800 watts. With the money u save on the sub, you could spend on an enclosure. The box i heard was a folded horn.

Thanks everyone for their replys and suggestions. After spending some time looking around this forum and noticing people using the Fi Q it definately sounds like a sub i am interested in. I love sound quality and tight responsive bass but i like it loud at the same time. As that goes i am undecided as to whether or not i should go sealed or ported. All i have had to date has been ported but i know that none of them were tuned properly as they were premade boxes. So i cannot say that i prefer one or the other since ive never heard a properly tuned ported box or a good sealed box. what kind of power do the Fi Qs need?

Q's are 1000wRMS, with the BP Power option they can handle a bit more though. I would have to recommend ported if you're looking to get loud, have it properly designed by F/C or even one of the esteemed box builders on these forums //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
