New to group - Sub Question

I'm new to the group, so hello everyone!

I've seen a lot of suggestions on subwoofers (that I'm unfamiliar with, such as Fi, TC, DD, Focal, etc...), by reading through a lot of the threads. I'm used to the kickers, alpines, vegas, rockfords, etc...

I was looking at getting a single 10" Alpine SWS-1043D DVC 4ohm for my moderate system (this sub, I can get for about $90; however I'll cap my sub budget at $150); also this sub is shallow mount, which I need.

Based on what I have to work with: around $150, single cab truck, and the amp I have is an Alpine MRP-M450 (which will deliver 400watts to the sub at 2 ohms). I'm looking for SQ, with decent low end. "Not looking to break the SPL record". Also my box volume is calculated to be 0.89 cu ft.

From your experience, what is the best sub to get with these circumstances (or will the Alpine do just fine?

Thanks,

EMoe

honestly i doun't like that sub. if going with alpine i say type r. you could try a rd audio classic or image dynamic idq, those are both $150 shipped new.

^^^ he needs a shallow mount woofer.

I know pioneer makes some decent shallow mount subs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Even regular cab mini-trucks can fit a regular sized 10 behind the seat, is there some reason this must be a slim sub? Contrary to popular belief, performance does suffer with the slim subs, only use them if necessary.

missed that altogether. but yeah, the pioneer is actually pretty decent. kicker makes one also, but imo it's not as nice as the pioneer. also, the ed shallow mount is on sale right now, no experience with it though.

Well with my seat all the way back (I'm a tall guy). I measured about 6.5" at the bottom, and 3.5" at the top for a wedged shaped box (about 19" high max). Most of the normal 10" subs I've seen are a bit too long or deep (considering the thickness of the MDF as well).

Maybe I'm missing something //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif ?

Thanks

No, if you must have the seat all the way back, you will have a hard time fitting tens. Have you considered an array of 8's? Mount the subs down low with the port(s) firing up or to the sides.

Or, if by chance you have buckets, you could invert one larger sub between the seats. Depth would then be a non-issue.

Well I want to stick with a sealed enclosure. There must be a good, shallow mount 10" sub out there in my price range (since the "new" Alpine type S isn't favored here).

2nd: If I decide to go with 8's (2 of them), what's good out there that would give me clean accurate bass, with some nice lows (again, "not trying to out boom my neighbor //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif "); maybe around 70-80 bucks each. Powered by the same amp I mentioned earlier?

Thanks again!

as far as 8's go, I have 2 Resonant Engineering RE8's in my trunk running off of a 300 watt amp, and they get plenty LOUD for me. IF I fold down the back seat on the drivers side, my rearview mirror will vibrate into the downward position. They're closer to 100 bucks each, unless you get lucky and get a used set from someone like I did (they'd only been used like twice for a few minutes just to test them).

I have a single ED 9kv ported in my jeep right now, sounds pretty good. With the forum discount (go to edesignaudio.com and in the search box type in "forum discount") they are 55+shipping each. I have been pretty impressed, though I have not tried sealed yet. They also have the SQ10, a shallow mount sub that I have heard good things about.

Heah, thanks a bunch! I really like what I see with the Elemental Designs. This may be the answer to my subwoofer delimna. I'll do some more reading and research on them though, before I choose one.

Is this brand a step above your kickers, alpines, rockfords? Are they comparable to image dynamics and Fi, or not?

eD is a company with a past of being shady and flat out lying to try and get our money. Would I recommend eD to a friend? Hell no.

Do yourself a favor, avoid the headache and the constant defending of a company not worth defending, dont buy eD products. There are plenty of other top-quality american manufacturers to chose from (ImageDynamics, FI, SS, etc), why chose to buy from a company with such a checkered past?

Stay away from eD. They will bend you over and chance they get.
