2013 silverado - stock stereo is...less than spectacular.

While I'm a home-audio nut, I'm a car-audio idiot.

Please point me in a direction...brand of speakers? Can I keep the "head" of this system? Decent subwoofer? Etc...

Just to be clear: I will research the snot out of your recommendations. I am a true believer that you get what you pay for, and I am not fond of the saying "pretty nice for the money." It's either good or it isn't - but it may also be a great value! I also love my music clear, neutral and occasionally loud.

Let’s get started!

Thanks in advance for your input…

Honestly, "it depends."

Will a new set of good speakers (and nothing else) be enough for me? If so, I am willing to pay for them. If I need a whole new shebang, then we'll need a little compromise.

Let's say $1200, and go from there. Am I way low? High? Help!!

You'll probably be happy with a good set of components up front and a single 10 or 12" in the back w/ a couple amps to power both the front stage and substage.

What type of factory unit is up front? Nav? Regular cd player?

What size speakers in the front doors?

Standard cab, ext ect....

I don't know what size speakers are in there, but - it's extended cab, NOT the Bose upgrade system, Regular GM stereo (w/cd, but no nav).

This truck is three days old. Those speakers rattle.

Ok you need 6.5 components up frt. look at the cdt es62im. Also an amp for them I suggest the mmats 6150 6 channel amp. 2 b2 8's under the rear seat or sa8v2 you'll need power wires and either a sound processor or eq if you want to use the stock deck along with a loc I can give you prices for the whole system if you like

Wow excellent input! Fast too, thanks, all. Sure,mylows10, send the prices along.

Newbie Q's: Seems answered, but - I can keep my factory head? (This is relevant because of bluetooth, onstar, and XM).

Also - Where can put any amps? Subwoofer, under rear seat, no problem. The seat folds up, but i can stack stuff on a sub box when needed. What do people do with the amplifiers?

I have a 97 z71 extra cab. My amps are on the back wall behind the seat and yes subs and box under the seat. I'll send you some prices and links in an hour when I get back to the shop

amps can generally be put anywhere, under the bucket seats depending on their size, or mounted behind the rear seat is where i had my bigger amp when i had a truck, never had any problems.
