Wildcats shut out Bulldogs, 56-0 - ivpressonline.com

BRAWLEY — Ignoring a strong, cold wind and rain, the Brawley Union High football team beat an outmanned Calexico High squad, 56-0, here Friday night.

“The kids brought out the right intensity for the game and just went out and played very well,” said Brawley coach Jon Self. “I think we are focused on playing well and taking momentum into the playoffs.”

The Wildcats dominated the first half, holding Calexico to 3 yards of total offense while racking up 235 yards.

“They weren’t as ready as we were,” said Brawley’s Martin Garza, a junior who plays both offensive and defensive line. “Our coaches make us concentrate on our plays in practice and what they did was what we practiced”

Brawley senior defensive back Joseph Zamudio opened and closed the Wildcats scoring, returning an interception 27 yards for a touchdown less than a minute into the game.

Zamudio picked off another pass from Calexico quarterback Diego Moreno in the third quarter, this time running 67 yards to score.

“I’m a running back too … I’ve just been playing on defense all the time,” Zamudio said. “I’m a varsity basketball player too and the second one was like running the court.”

“We practice interception returns and besides his running I thought we did a good job of blocking,” Self said.

Brawley fullback and linebacker Jared Mohamed went over the 1,000-yard mark rushing for the season and added four touchdowns to lead the Wildcats with 18.

Two came the traditional way on runs of 18 yards and 1 yard but the other two came as fumble recoveries in the end zone, both within a two-minute span of the first quarter.

The first happened as a snap sailed over the head of Calexico punter Ernesto Gonzalez while the second was a shotgun snap over Moreno’s head.

“It wasn’t like I was the first one there the first time; they were fighting for it and it was just bouncing around and I fell on it,” Mohamed said. “The second one I saw go over his head and my eyes lit up.”

The weather undoubtedly played a part but Brawley used the wintry night to its advantage.

“The rain narrowed us down to what we wanted to do, which was to run and hold on to the ball,” Self said.

Brawley’s other scores came on touchdown runs of 7 yards by quarterback Josh Godinez and a 32-yard run by fullback Jacob Valenzuela.

The victory improved the Wildcats’ Imperial Valley League record to 3-1 (6-3 overall) while the Bulldogs are now 0-4 (0-9).

Calexico plays at Southwest High at 7 p.m. Thursday while Brawley plays at Central Union High at 7 p.m. Friday.
