of all the TL orientations, i like this more than any other. but i also prefer woofer and port together. this is typically the preferred orientation for TL but less common than having the output away from the woofer due to complexity. the 8" TL i did was too small of a box to do this (despite being a huge box for a single 8). if i had more room, i would have done it. this is the kind i will build for my home theater (but i'll have a single 12" and use my 9' ceiling height to go up and back with a taper). I think the taper-style TL makes sense for home audio but for car audio subs we don't want to lose free area because we're sweeping so much air and velocity-effects compound the system.
note the JL Audio chamber-coupled port system.
