Need some advie on first home audio setup

I recently bought and lcd lg tv and got the idea to add a good sound system to it. I was thinking of getting two tower speakers and maybe a powered woofer along with a receiver. I would like to keep under 500 if possible

i will tell you what , the decent names have really gone to crap recently. My uncle owns a fairly new yamaha reciever and focal sib/cub speakers. The speakers are mediocre at best and the reciever has been repaired under warranty 3 times. My brother owns a yamaha from 5 or 6 years back and it trumps the new yamaha stuff tenfold , weighs significantly more and sounds amazing on nothing more than a pair of bose 301's. Unless you are shelling out big bucks i would buy i used reciever from a better era in electronics , almost all of the new mainstream stuff is pitiful right now.
