I have always had a AMD computer setup at home. I recently started a new job, and have convinced them to increase the memory in their Dell computer. I opened up the computer, and looked at the memory in the machine, and the numbers are different then I am used to. I am used to seeing PC2700, PC3200 ect. Can anyone tell me by the code, what kind of memory I should get to replace whats in the machine? It has 2 sticks of 512 and we want to add at least 2 sticks of 1g each. Here is what the machine has in it...

(2) 512MB 1RX8 PC2

4200U-444-12-D3

CN M378T6553C23-CD5 0615

Thats what is printed on the Samsung Memory

Thanks!

wont really matter if the motherboard wont support that much. i would suggest looking at the owners manual that came w/ your dell and see if it states what type of ram it uses as well as how much the motherboard will support.

my sister had a dell, she had 256mb of ram, had to upgrade her to 2 512 sticks since her mobo will support up to 1 gig.

Oh ok. I looked at the Mother Board and there are 4 slots for memory. The two white slots have the two 512 sticks and the two black spots are empty.

PC4200 aka DDR2 533 MHz

DDR2 and DDR aren't cross compatable. This fact plagues me since it means buying new ram to upgrade. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Is this for a server? Maybe CAD/CAM, or a gamer's test rig? I honestly have yet to find a need for more than a gig of RAM in any application apart from maybe video editing. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

Yes I am a CAD operator and design and make corrections to house plans.

It has a high rated DDR chip, so it is a relatively new machine and obviously capable of handling over 2GB.

My home network/game server easily uses the 2GB it has. Video editing consumes a crap load of memory as well. Your typical person won't see the benefit of going passed 1GB though.

Well I called Dell today while at work. The mother board in the computer will hold up to 4gig of memory, so we are fine there. We both came to the same conclusion, that there is something wrong with the operating system. So Monday I plan to reload windows and hope that fixes some of our problems.
