I bought a used dell 1520 off a friend of mine to give to my mother in law, the person I bought it off said it only works when it's plugged in. I've had this problem before on my dell 1318 so I thought a new battery would fix it. I bought I new battery for it, put it in, turn it on, works perfect, but when I plug in the charger it says "plugged in, not charging", i know it's not the battery, could it be the charger? And if it's the charger, how come itll keep the laptop on with the bad battery in it? I just need to know how to fix this, thanks in advance guys!

Does it always say that? It might just say that if your battery is fully charged already, it might not actual start charging until your battery drops below a certain point. Obviously it knows it's plugged in, so I don't think it's the charger.

Battery might not of been dead to begin with.

Dell also has a chip that determines if it's a legitimate charger and tests for charger issues.

If the chip on the board starts going out, it will make the laptop think any charger is not a dell charger and will not charge the battery and only work when plugged in.

That's the worst case scenario. Other scenario is the charger itself is on its way out and no longer recognizable by the chip as a dell charger. Test it with a new charger, if it still doesnt charge then only way to fix it is replacing the board ;\

With new charger and battery run dell diagnostic, or even before you get new charger.

Shouldn't be an OS issue IMO

Maybe the charger is incompatible with the battery.
Charger incompatable with battery???

People if you don't know don't answer =P

Don't mean to dog on you but that's ridiculous, the battery can be incompatable with a laptop, charger can be incompatable with a laptop, but the charger can never be incompatable with a battery.

When you boot does it say "not a dell charger hit f1(i think f1) to continue" If not that warning might be disabled in the bios, if you can go into the bios and check if the warning on charger issue is disabled or enabled, cant remember the exact name of the option (should be f2 or del I believe)

In all honesty, I don't even know why I said that. I didn't think the statement through.

Its a glitch in Win 7. Turn it on and remove the charger. Then remove the battery. Then put it back in and turn it on and then try charging. Let me know how it goes.

it had the problem with windows vista on it, i tried what you said to do and I got the same results.

he is very right... this could cause the problem also.. it could be the wronger charger as stated above.. has a similar problem.. and i bought a new charger and this fixed the problem.. thanks and hope this helps

so i restarted it, hit f2, under the "battery info" field it says the battery is performing normally, but under the ac adapted it says "unknown device installed", I ordered a new charger, it'll here tomorrow.
