So.... been doing a lot of research lately about free air/ IB installs. I have a 2005 nissan altima se with two 8" old *** subs in my trunk.
Now this was a great setup for my last car that was a hatchback cuz i would get massive cabin gain and lots of noise with little power but now.... my trunk is so well sealed from the cabin i can only hear the car shaking, i cant hear the bass.
The only bass i can hear is coming from the 2 factory speakers behind the back seats on the rear deck and although they do have ok bass, i want more.
So at this point i'm hell bent on doing a rear deck install. The plan is to literally cut out a hole between my factory speakers on the rear deck, put a sub in there, and get it looking pretty some how.
The only thing i really need to decide on is the subwoofer to put in. I dont think ill have room for anything bigger than a 10" without making some pretty major modifications. So the subs that ive been looking at are the Kicker CompR 10" 4 ohm sub and just the plain Kicker Comp 10" 4 ohm.
Only problem is i dont know how well the CompR would hold up to a free air install... looks like it doesnt have all too stiff of a suspension but then again i wont be trying to blow my windows out of the car with these subs either i just want some good strong bass to take the strain off the factory speakers.
Heres some pics of the rear deck so you know what im working with. Im going to have to change the position of the light in the trunk so it doesnt get in the way of the subwoofer other than that, looks like ill just be doing alot of cutting through that sheet metal/aluminum and cutting and stapling some fabric.
And the other thing im thinking about doing is maybe (this is if i just cant get the performance i want out of free air) building a small box to fit under the sub but that would be more of a last resort as it would probably take up a little too much room in the trunk and idk how good i could get it to look.
Any advice is appreciated, this is a project i hope to be done with soon because i can no longer stand the factory speakers bass.
-Thanks
