ok so i know theres threads about amp gains and i looked on them for the equation BUT i just dont get it.

ok so imna be running a Hifonics 2608D so lets say 2500x1 would be 2500 (duh) and the sqrt of 2500 is 50? so do i set the gains till it shows 50volts?

You set gains according to output voltage on the HU.

Get the maximum Voltage coming from the HU without clipping. Then set your gain to match that voltage.

WATTS = AMPS X VOLTS.

Higher the preoutput voltage. Lower the gains.

Shoot with my Eclipse amp, the gain is all the way down.

If you want to get technical with this, making it harder than it needs to be, then get a oscilloscope and a DMM and do it.

The voltage coming out of his headunit has very little to do with the task of setting the gain on the amp. You just turn your volume up on the HU to somewhere less that top (I like 75%).

That formula is correct, but it doesn't help him at all in his question (unless he has a good DC clamp meter).

The formula you need is P = V^2 divided by R.

Sooo... if you want 2500W on 1 ohm...

2500 = Vsquared divided by 1

2500 = V^2

So, V = 50

The V (Voltage) changes according to the ohms you are using. If using 2ohm, 50V is not the correct answer. If you nudge the gain up a little and the voltage doesn't go up, that's the top-end of your amp. Other than that, follow one of the standard threads on setting gains.

sorry i should of been more specific with what that x1 was

You didn't say how many ohms, so I don't know if you were right or not. Cool chart outspoken. That should answer his question.
OUTSPOKEN

thanks for the chart man now i know for sure im right.

actually one more question iv read a couple of places where it says to turn off boost,loudness,HP,LP all the extra stuff off the deck. BUT THEN i see a couple places that said set everything the way you listen to it THEN set the amp.
