need help removing virus**

Start the System Restore tool at a command prompt

1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in Safe Mode with a command prompt.

For additional information about the Safe mode with a command prompt, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

315222 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/) A description of the Safe mode boot options in Windows XP

2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.

3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

If Windows XP starts

1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.

2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.

3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.

4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.

5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.

6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page appears.

7. Click OK.

System restore usually will not get rid of viruses. If your virus removal program isn't doing anything, the virus is probably not yet in the database. Virus software is much more effective in preventing viruses than it is in correcting them. It sounds like you'll have to do some work to get rid of it.

First of all, see if you can find a malicious software removal tool. Get on another computer and google the symptoms/error messages your computer is showing. Most of the time you will find a fix. If you find one, download the malicious software removal tool you find, copy it to a flash drive, and copy and run it on your infected computer.

If you can't find anything that works, a reformat is your next step. Reformatting will almost always fix the problem. Make sure you save any files that are important to you, and wait at least a week before you access them again. By that time, your virus software should have added it to it's database (if it's any good). Scan to make sure the infection isn't in those files before accessing them.

Well sweet most of my stuff is back but my computer still lags..I bet the virus is in there somewhere still. Now ill just download some better antivirus software. Any recomendations? Right now I'm using spybot and avg free edition

You more than likely did not remove all traces of the virus. Follow the steps I described above. AVG is good software, but keep in mind that none of them can fix a virus that is not yet in the database. Next time, be smarter about what you download.
