Everyone - thanks for your input. I have located the problem, what a pain in the A$$.
The battery in a Porsche 911 is located in a tight battery box in the front trunk (i.e., bonnet for 911 enthusiasts). The battery anchor plate managed to work itself loose allowing the battery motion enough to short against the chassis, hence the periodic nature of HU issues.

That being said, I'm probably going to re-wire the radio to it's original configuration using power, switched power and ground via the instrument cluster to minimize the electrical chaos.
