Need expert assitance - Blaupunkt installation

Hi Folks new to the forum!

I'm installing a Blaupunkt New Orleans in my 1981 Porsche 911sc. I've run power from the battery and the radio power is lost occasionally???? Do these new units have circuit protection that may indicate an increase in voltage from my charging system is causing this unit to shut off?

BTW, I've disconnected all speakers and the antenna lead so I think I've isolated this to a power supply or ground issue. I'm on my second ground so I think its good.

I am loooooosing my mind here and need some assistance.... I have checked everything over and over.....

Thanks!!

Jeff

I'll run the ground to the battery tomorrow. As I stated, I'm already on my second ground. The current ground is directly to the fire wall under the dash. Formerly I had it grounded to a lead used in the instrument cluster....

I'll keep you posted.

Some of the older europeans and older cars have funky wiring. Ive even heard of a few that use a positive chassis. Common ground systems etc.

It has nothing to do with a non-steady voltage. Show me a car with a complete steady voltage... lol

I'd try running 12 v + (yellow wire) directly to battery positive, then ground(black) directly to battery negative, then go to the ignition lines, test for a switched 12 v (accessory) and run the accessory(red wire) from the cd player there. The rest should be fine, make sure no speaker lines are shorting on each other too. This effectively avoids as much of the stock wiring as possible for the power connections.

How does it lose power? while the cars running? with the key in the on position? Or does it lose memory when shut off? Does it cut in and out? or just shut off? I need more info

I ran the ground wire to the battery this morning and observed the same issue!

(Currently both 12V power and ground wire are connected directly to the battery.)

When the problem occurs, everything is operational and I'll be listening to my ipod via aux input cable (for example) and then head unit dies like there is no power. Then the unit turns on and then dies. This goes on with no distinct time intervals. All when driving key in the on position. No memory loss cuts-in-and-out is the best description.

As far as the wiring goes, I've reproduced this issue with no speakers (or antenna for that matter) connected so I'm pretty sure it's not a short in those areas.

I AM NOT using the switched lead currently. I tried running the switched power from the ignition and ran switched and constant 12V leads to the same source. All three wiring configurations give the same result.

Although I changed my voltage regulator last year I think this issue my be related to either my alternator and/or my voltage regulator.

My best guess is that my charging system periodically delivers a voltage spike and the head unit shuts off as a protection measure. I'm going to hook up my volt meter and see if there is any correlation.

Advice please!!

Meter the wires while driving and see what you get. Its not a far cry to say the HU is faulty.

If your restoring the car it would be good to diagnose any electrical problem it might have.

if you are connected directly to your battery and you know your wiring is solid, there is something wrong with your HU.
I agree with this diagnosis... I returned one HU already after I reached the same conclusion. I'm not so sure now that I am seeing this issues on the replacement HU. Both new units and not factory refurbished.

I'm going to monitor line voltage with my meter and see if I can gather any additional info.

Any thoughts???

this is very strange.. you are sure that you have connected the switched and constant wires together and are solidly connected to the pos of your battery, and the same with ground directly to the battery?

honestly if this is the case i cant imagine what else might be the problem if it is not the HU. battery has a good full charge? try connecting the HU directly to the battery of your other car. if the problem continues it HAS to be your HU.

hmmmmm....

My switched lead is not currently connected to anything.
