Hey in the past i have just kinda reused the stock plastic piece for the door speaker.
I have been reading and wanted to do a better install this time. Was planning on using a MDF ring and some modeling clay, to mount the new ones but i have some issues with the current car.
Basically the factory plastic speaker ring is big and really offset aiming the speaker up and back toward the seats.(pics to follow)
The plastic ring angle sinks the one edge into the door while the other sticks out a couple inches. Also the plastic ring is pretty large as the opening in the door is ~10" wide by 8.5" tall
Also on the plastic door panel on the inside of it behind the speaker grille it has a shroud that directs the sound out the grille instead of bouncing around between the panel and door frame(again look at pics)
Just using the stock ring that was made for 6 3/4" speakers, I have to cut the door a little to align the speaker with the shroud(no pic of this hard to explain, but can prob get a pic). Basically the speaker needs to go towards the hinge more but hits the door.
It looks to take some creative engineering on my part to get the same design as stock with MDF or possibly fiberglass and I really like the stock placement/aiming of the speaker.
I am wondering if I just make a mdf ring and put that on top of the stock plastic ring and put some clay under the stock plastic. I would also make a MDF frame that goes around the big opening where the 4 screws attach to the door to strengthen the door opening also.
Do you think that would be sufficient in your educated opinions??
