Need box for fast bass response

I usually associate a "fester" response as something that has to do with transient response and group delay. Tuning lower will definitely help in both of those categories, as well as making the enclosure smaller. The thing with this sub is that I wouldn't run it ported if I wanted those qualities.
If I wanted a lot of low end, quick transients, and low group delay, I would definitely seal it.
By the same token, someone looking for good transient response in car audio wouldn't be using 18" drivers anyway //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I fully expect my sealed 18's to be slow and sloppy because they aren't 8's //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

What I meant to say is that if you're looking for clean transients, a smaller driver will be cheaper, have less output and will be easier to install properly compared to a typical basshead install.

Yup, I think truth be told though most of us would cut out some good sound, for more sound in most situations so we don't do the logical thing.

I like stuff to sound good, but I also recognize I'm no audiophile and probably never will be. I just like experimenting with different stuff and seeing how it sounds //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

To the op, don't be afraid to try sealed, you can always build a new box.

My bad pv audio I didn't see that but as for the rest of the comments I'm goal is not to go fully for sound quality but just to be loud and not sound completely shitty

Also I have 2 10s cvx and they don't sound all that good on rock for me anymore

so now I'm just thinking about getting the 18 investing in some good components and installing a toggle switch to be able to turn of the sub when I wanna listen to rock

thanks for all the input so first I'm going to try a porter enclosure I'm thinking 6-8 ft tuned to 28-30 and see how I like that and i can always go sealed and being an 18 I assume it'll stillbe quite loud

Illbe running th sub of a kx 1200, hope it satisfies me

use a small box tuned low. my last sub tuned higher in a huge box wasn't anywhere near as "quick" as my new sub in a way smaller box tuned low. it's probably also very sub dependent though as well.

but try it tuned low in a small box.

also it is going to be vehicle dependent as well. i have the same sub that was in my car before, that i thought was "slow" in my room right now for HT/music in the same box just tuned 5hz lower and it is actually doin pretty good.

As mentioned above, you might want to try a box on the smaller size, I had a q15 in a 4ft at around 29hz and honestly didn't dig it very much. My music tastes are mostly rock/metal/blues though.

Wish I woulda tried it sealed or in a smaller box before I got rid of it.

x2

you guys do make a lot of good points so as I said I'll go ported and if I don't like it I'll try sealed

The other thing is I don't have much to compare to bc I've never heard anything other a few mainstream brands so I'll most likely be impressed either way

I run a 15" Q in 3.5@32Hz in the GF's car and she mostly listens to rock and it sounds very good. Do the 18 in the smallest recommended size and tune around 28-32. Also get a GOOD set of mids that will play down to around 60Hz and you should be fine...

This is what I run in my SQ set-up

If you ever want to hear and feel the fastest tightest bass ever come have a seat and I will play a drum track for ya
