Well my 2nd pc decided that it doesn't want to be taken out of storage and work and I'm at a breaking point so I need it working. Anyway, it's nothing special about 9 months old but it boots up and i get no video to my monitor. I'm guessing it's the Video Card so I need input on what to get. I had an ATX 9800 with 128mb yada yada nothing special. I want to keep it under 200 so suggest away, i have no brand pref.

If it shows the POST info and then goes blank, then I'm going to say that it is the harddrive. Because it sounds like it is loading, but when it can't find the kernel on the hardrive then it doesn't know what to do. If it was the gpu, then it wouldn't show anything at all. Another thing, is to try to boot in safe mode, and make sure that you have the right/newest drivers for your gpu installed. Also, sometimes when I run into problems that seem to have no apparent cause or reason, I just try reseting the CMOS and that sometimes fixes it. I hope I have helped, and not made it worse.... :-(

maybe i typed it wrong at first but here i'll type a step 1 through then end of what happens lol.

1) Adam (me) pushes start button

2) Green LED's on fans turn on and start rotating.

3) CPU fan turns

That is all lol. There is the amber light on my monitor that only comes on when there is no signal, other than that it makes no buzzes, no beeps, no nothing. The pc is essentially new as i've had to rebuild it after the flood we got in my apt.

If the video card is the issue, then try goin with a nvidia 6600GT card. if your motherboard has AGP on it (which if it's older, it probably does, it'll be about a 3'' slot above the white (PCI) slots), then you may want to think twice before putting money into it because everything will be moving to whats called "PCI Express", which is what is replacing AGP. Buying the AGP card, you won't be able to upgrade down the road because they won't make them anymore!

ok... your getting alot of random "advice".... first off alot of things can cause it to come on and not POST.... if you have the case speaker hooked up you'll get beep codes for some problems but not all.... even having the IDE channels hooked up wrong has caused this for systems I've built.... other's could be the CPU, RAM, etc etc etc....

Here is what you should do to troubleshoot this problem....

Open the case and remove ALL the hardware EXCEPT the MB, CPU, CPU fan, VC, RAM, and the boot HDD.... try booting, if you get the same problem borrow the VC out of the other computer to test the VC... continue this until you get it to boot... also DOUBLE check you monitor connections....

another tactic would be let it run for a bit and turn up the regular computer speakers... if you can hear windows boot it's not the VC or anything... it's just the connection/monitor....

As for a brand either will do... decide WHAT you are going to do with your VC before you buy any of them... ATI and Nvidia both make great cards but it really comes down to price and what exactly you want to do with it that will make your decisions

feel free to PM me if you want someone to walk you through troubleshooting or post here more... I have many years of experience in PC repair...

wouldnt call it random "advice" unless your just giving him more random garbage. Yet, my garbage and your garbage combined makes captain planet hes our hero. I dunno i have to go to bed, tests tests and tests are tomorrow!

the advice is mostly shots in the dark... on target but he needs to troubleshoot before he buys anything... I know how it goes though.. I always get burned buying shit I don't need on cars...
