"need" is relative. if you power them from the head unit you will hear audible distortion above 1/3 volume which limits the signal you send to the subs, which forces you to turn up the sub gain, which causes more noise. a head unit amplifier is the size of a credit card. nothing impressive.I was already planning on getting some speakers, but do I really need anp for them? They're 6.5's
& also, would that be a separate amp?
you don't need an external amp for it to work and make noise at high volumes. if you want good sounding music at higher volumes, then an external amp is required for the speakers. this also lets you insert a high pass filter on the speaker to remove low bass from them - which has the benefit of providing further musical clarity. when replacing the front speakers, you will want a component set so the tweeters can be placed and aimed properly (not down below your knees). your car should already have separate tweeters up front. note that adding speakers and a speaker amp further increases the effort and cost since you are now wiring speakers.
