My first recone was a disaster :(

Got my recone kits in from Fi, 2 10" recones for Konaki motors, kits came saturday, I began on saturday.

I cut up the 2 Konaki's, one 12" and one 15", the bolts came out of the 12" easy, all but one of the bolts came out of the 15", I had to drill the head off the last bolt.

So, one of my 10's has only 5 bolts //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif , well, I used locktite thread locker on all the bolts so I guess I will be cool.

After bolting down the baskets I went to put the terminals on, thats when I noticed that on one side of one of the baskets, the hole you bolt the terminal too, was misaligned, so I could not bolt the terminal on.

Well, I refused to be stopped, so I used the terminals from the konaki on that side, they are seperate, so it did not matter that the hole to bolt it to was off.

I then mixed up the epoxy and placed it on the landings, got my envelope for a shim and dropped the cone in, the epoxy locked tight to the spiders, but would not hold the surround //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif .

So, long story short, I used a tc 7 motor to push the cone down on the glue, then applied more epoxy all over the edge of the cone and landing, (hoping that when it hardens, the cone will not seperate from the basket).

I had this problem with both subs, the epoxy would hold the spiders on contact, but not the cone, I must have chose the wrong brand for foam/plastic/rubber/ whatever the hell its made of.

So, I am pretty sure my subs are going to fall apart once I install them, at least, I KNOW the cone will seperate from the basket. I wonder is there anything I can do for that area should it not hold?

Besides ordering another set of recones //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif , well, at least the sub checks out ok, they read correctly on the dmm and they worked when I tested them with a battery.

Tommorow I am going to free air them on the HT reciever, see if they come apart off that, if they survive 100 rms, into the car and onto the kx 2500.1 they go.

My next thread will be me looking for help reglueing my cone //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif , if nothing else, it was a learning expierience //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I have 2 more motors I need to recone, I will try again, it was not so hard, I think if I had had better epoxy, or at least some that will bond to foam/rubber , all would have been good.

The sub LOOKS good, but it aint how it looks but how it functions..... we shall see about that.

I am rather frustrated though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

haha, sucks though. you should of done it in 2 stages. like, glue the spider landing first, allow it to harden for 2 hours, then glue the surround while never taking the shim out. when gluing the surround i wrap the outer edge of the surround with saran wrap and put clothes line clips all around the sub to put pressure onto the surround. then give it a day for the glue to cure. then just remove everything.

edit: what kind of epoxy are you using? a recommendation of mine is to use perma poxy's 30min extra strenght 2 part epoxy, it's a clear/yellowish glue when mixed. has worked for me with my recones.

you should have just payed for shipping to have them do it correctly.
Well, I did, but USPS lost my first Konaki motor, I wont ship anymore of my motors, at least not through them.

I ended up having to get a 3rd konaki, to replace the lost one, and I am still waiting on my claim from USPS.

That sounds like a good way to do it, with the pins and all. I used Devcon 5 min 2500 lbs psi stuff I found at Walmart.

I used that on the spiders and it bonded fine, just didnt want to bond to the surround, I went out and bought more epoxy, it looks very similar to what you mentioned, it is extra strength 30 min and it is clear/yellow when mixed, its just not called perma poxy, **** it stunk!

Thats whats on there now, its setting over night so I will see how it looks tommorow once it has hardened up.

the perma poxy stuff doesn't stink. when i reconed my XXX motor with a SX soft part assembly i glued it in my room. didn't smell at all really. it's very similar to the loctite brand 2 part epoxy. just anoff brand or soem shit i don't know. i get mine from an advanced auto part store.
