my crossover method

hey i just got my sub in!! a 12" idMAX powered by an MTX 1501d! i wanted to crossover my sub as high as i could go without drawing the sound stage toward the trunk. IIRC the frequency at which sound is "locatable" is around 80 hz? so i popped a 90 hz test tone CD and did not unplug my subs NOR my components. i played the 90 hz test tone on my system with the crossover on the MTX ALL THE WAY DOWN. then i turned the x-over knob up slowly until the 90 hz test tone was barely audible and obviously coming from the trunk. then i lowered the knob until i couldn't even tell the test tone was coming from the bacc. i think this is a real good method of setting my crossover because with the components playing the test tone at the same time, i have an idea of how the "blend" will sound like with a certain frequency. would anyone agree this is a good method of crossing subs over at a certain point??

first of all, a) is the only part that confuses me... of course, i've setup my components WIHTOUT the sub. its crossed over as low as it can go without distorting.. is that right?? the thing is, my infinity perfect components arent really great with the midbass.. its not as loud as the tweets.. should i set the crossover network on the components to -6db since this is true??? i think im going to try that to see how it sounds. also, how can i tell if the sub is blending nicely with the MIDBASS?? in what relation should the sub be playing to the mids when playing test tones? mine is set so that at 90 hz the mids are fully audible and the sub is BARELY. is that right?

Using a test tone CD (increasing in frequency from 30 Hz to 100 Hz), determine the crossover setting. The crossover should be set to the frequency where ...
a) The sub-bass blends in perfectly with the midbass

b) Slightly lower than when the sub sounds like it is coming from the rear

c) Slightly lower than when the sub starts to sound unnatural

Of course, you should set your speakers up first ...

i'm ommitted from B because a XX15 ported into the cabin makes it hard not to thinkits comeing from the trunk.......... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Can still be accomplished //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif With proper dampening and tuning, you still shouldn't be able to tell where the sub is.
