If your sub is within the rated power of the amp(say 1000 watts r.m.s. sub, with a 800 watt r.m.s. amp 1100 watts max power) would the signal have to be clipped to reach the r.m.s. of the sub??? Would you damage the sub or amp playing the sub with that amp??

Generally speaking it shouldnt cause any damage if you dont exceed the rms rating for the sub. The rating says that it can handle 1000w without a problem, and the amp will on the average through 800w to the sub, safely under the recommended thermal limit.

you might be ok, but personally i wouldn't try it. i typically try to get an amp that pushes a little bit more power RMS than the RMS rating on my speakers. that way there really isn't a posibility of a clipped signal, and you can adjust the gains accordingly and it'll work fine. i also like it because i can lay off the EQ's and enhancements on the HU and amp, and put as much pure, unrefined/unaltered amplified signal to the speakers. i just like that sound the best, rather than when its all eq'd and bass boosted and whathaveyou
