money advice needed

I understand your situation. I was going to school and employed with the school district when I was 20 i was rear ended on the way to work. I was messed up real bad for a while. The med bills and credit card bills that I could no longer pay were scary! I moved back home ( i didnt want to) and went to physical therapy for a yr or so. I ended up trying to become a bodybuilder because I liked working out so much as a result of pt. I went back to school at 22..... It will all work out. It just takes time and patience.

Have you looked into grants? Good luck and hang in there.. Bassman

why were you laid off? have you talked to unemployment about going back to school. like not hear say from people that think they know all the ins and outs of unemployment but an actual representative there?

im asking because i got laid off two years ago and the state is paying me unemployment + tuition to go to school as part of a retraining program. unemployment has many programs for unemployed people that most people know nothing about. seek info from them. sometimes its tough cause frankly not every unemployment employee even knows what they are talking about but some of them do.

good luck

Well, I was laid off because the company is down to having almost no work left for anybody. Michigan + factory = fail.

Michigan has a program called no worker left behind to retrain people, but it is only valid for community colleges. I have taken everything transferable towards my degree at a community college. They do me no good at this point.

trust me there is more than just that program available. they are adding them everyday now.... the program i am is in called TAA. its for factory workers that have lost their job to foreign trade. look into it, you might qualify.

im lucky because my community college has been certified so that all classes offered there transfer and they have university partnership programs where you can take classes there but your degree would be from another college (kent state, ohio university, bowling green, and about 12 other ohio schools)

but again keep looking. some of the info and programs available is tough to obtain but its there.

Hey I just looked up that TAA thing. I don't think I would qualify because my work hasn't been outsourced. Its just stopped. It was a lot of odds and ends, only a little bit was car related. It is also a really small business that is barely on the map

also, it don't see anything about real colleges on this

"Training: Eligible workers may receive up to two years of classroom training in a program that is designed to lead to employment upon completion. Vocational and technical training, on-the-job training, and remedial education are examples of other types of training available."

How did you qualify? Looks like a pain. Thanks for the heads up though

that part refers to college. if you are going to school for a degree that will get you a job in a rising field they will pay for you to get an associates degree, bachelors degree as well but theres like 50 different criteria you have to fall under to get that..... the rest of that refers to apprenticeships, state certificates, etc.

I qualified because my company closed our factory and moved all our business to their other plant in canada. I got lucky and our union pretty much filed all the paper work for us and what not. all i had to do was sign a couple forms and go to a couple meetings. then i had to write up a proposal to the state saying i needed X amt of dollars and I can get a job doing such and such and they decide whether to approve you or not.

i was just using the TAA as an example. there are countless number of programs just like it though. again talk to your local unemployment office and keep asking questions until you get answers. im sure ohios unemployment is slightly different than michigan but i bet they are pretty close as michigan is having alot of the same manufacturing problems as ohio has.

Sounds like its out of my reach. I live with my dad at the moment which wouldn't help my case, our work wasn't directly moved overseas...it was just a solid deterioration over the years.

I really appreciate you bringing that up though thanks a lot

yes, weve established that you probably dont fall into the category of TAA but you seem to be missing my point that there are many many more programs out there that you probably do qualify for you just need to look and find them. again be very persistent and to speak with some people at unemployment until you find out how they can help. they wont just offer you the information you have to go out and get it.

Well, it's harder than ever to find student loans. I used to be able to get enough to pay for my apartment, no questions asked. Now I'm only able to get enough to pay for school + food. I have to work for my apartment.

Are you talking about subsidized Stafford loans or combined subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans?

Every US citizen or PR qualifies for loans (assuming you're not a convicted drug dealer), they're federally guaranteed. I know many school financial aid departments will tell you that you only qualify for x number of dollars, but when you start digging, it turns out what they're talking about is subsidized Stafford loans, not the sum total available to you of subbed and unsubbed. This happened to me and cost me several years before I found out, time when I could have been in school but wasn't because I thought I couldn't afford it. Credit and current debt or collections have nothing whatsoever to do with your ability to get Stafford loans, unless those collections are currently-defaulted student loans.

That page shows you some of the limits. Of course, you can thank Bill Clinton for requiring that you use your parents' income to determine your eligibility amounts until you are 23 years old. That rolled out just in time to **** me, as well.

You can apply as an independent with special circumstances, but it may be denied, especially since you've been living with your parents all this time.... kinda hard to prove you are independent. If you are truly a 3rd year student as you say, then you should be able to borrow several thousand dollars.

As for how much you can borrow, you will be able to get enough to get your tuition paid for... you may well have to work to pay your rent and bills. You may have to have roommates to split costs. This is how college works.

Sorry if you're looking for someone to give you a nice car and free rent and bills so you can sit in a classroom. Move to Canada or Europe, they do that over there... here we (at least sometimes) expect people to actually sacrifice to make a better life for themselves in the future.

yeah we are a 3rd world country now. isn't the sacrifice paying the loans back? i dont expect anything for free. clearly my parents arent paying for it

oh and I'm not trying to go against what anybodies saying, I'm just tryin to figure all of this out. I guess it wont be done over an internet forum. I am well aware that almost all of you are older and wiser than me when it comes to money
Sooooooo- for $10,000 you could wall off a van, do 8-16 18's along with 20K watts worth of amps- Who need college?

Lemme know when u need it built //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

But if not- Financial Aid may be the way to go
