Mental retardation for gains?

OK so ive searched and read the do it your self posts for gains but im still not gettin it.

So here is what i got. My head unit is the Sony CDX-M850MP

I have the voltmeter and no test tone cds or the fancy thingy lots of people use to set gains.

Listen mostly to rap, sometimes to rock.

So PLEASE lay it out for me, how the hell do i do this thing??

I'd turn you radio up at your normal listening volume with the gains all down. slowly turn your gain up until you like the sound. try dif types of music and see where it is that you like it best with each type of music. you can always have your gains down a little and crank the volume a little from the front seat.

as long as the speakers can handle the power that clipping emits, his speakers will be fine.

how do i use the voltmeter to match the output of the headunit??

(Im not really mentally retarded, i know what im doing with the gains (Kind of) and would like a detailed explanation and have it be simple to follow..)
