MDF for front door speaker mounts?

Well, on my truck the stock front door speakers are 6x9s, and I want to install some Pioneer rev 6.5"s. I can get some well made plastic mounts for 45 shipped but I then realized I have some scrap 3/4" mdf in the shed. Would it hurt anything at all to make these out of MDF?

Go for it. It will work perfectly fine, and save you an insane amount of money considering you were going to pay $45 for something that costs about $5 to make.

3/4 MDF is actually better and much much cheaper... use clay or silicone to seal and make it airtight

Make sure that you waterproof the mdf with a sealant. Doors are a very damp environment.

I have some bedliner in a spray paint can that I will coat it with. I coated my MDF radio enclosure mounted on my ATV with the same bedliner and it's gotten washed and rained on, even coated with mud plenty times and it's never gave up on me.

Thick plastic is just as acoustically inert as MDF. MDF holds no benefits over the pictured product other than cost.

Depends on the density of the plastic and the wall thickness. Those in the pic appear to be cut from solid stock.

If you did go with the plastic spacers I would put something in between the doors and the spacer like dampening material of some kind

If you think it would be an issue with the plastic spacers, you should think it an issue with the MDF spacers as well. If the door is properly deadened, it should be an additional issue with either.
