yeah i think it is the model you said....i dunno its just mad slow...i was gonna wipe it anyway before the new semester and my roomate has a extra copy of vista...saw it...think it looks nice..figured what the hell.

Be careful on IBM's they have a ton of very specialized drivers. Let me see if I can find the link you need. I second the no vista, but that is just me.
Good news is that you can try vista and if you hate it, go back to XP. There is an option to save that information to roll it back.
CD-ROM Drivers only seem to be available via BIOS update, I am guessing you would need to install this via CD by burning the ISO using something like MagicISO
I would download that stuff and keep the network one handy that is the one you really want or you are ****ed if you load up the new OS and can't get on the net to get any other drivers so keep that one handy.
I have done a few thinkpads about the same age as yours and everything worked out of the box with the exception of the cd burner which I did not verify but imagine I would have heard someone complaining about it by now.
