i got alot of stuff answered....but now i need to know if i want to completely reformat my HD....what are some of the important things i need to put on my external HD before i do that....last time i wiped all my drivers etc and it sucked.....this time i am upgrading to Vista and i dont want that to be an issue.

You should find out what your components are and then search the net and download the drivers for it. Where you are upgrading to Vista you will need to find the Vista drivers though many XP ones work.

Sound card, video card, network and printer are going to be your main ones. Other than that just your personal stuff like pics, music, **** etc.. The biggy is the drivers though but you may find Vista already has a lot of them pre-loaded if your machine ifs not using fairly new components.

sorry im a computer n00b....so

machine is a IBM thinkpad from 2004....so i dont know if that means it has fairly new components are not....all my personal stuff is already on my HD....so yes or no for using my current drivers...

should i just wipe the entire computer.

Don't get vista....especially on the thinkpads...they have 512meg ram and will not handle it well at all

Try going here and see if it can auto-detect your model # and I can help you lookup your drivers.. Are you sure your PC is going to be able to push Vista at a reasonable speed?

Your thinkpad may have 512MB but that does not mean everyone else does. I have 2GB in mine which is what I recommend for running Vista.

i have 1.6ghz processor and 1.25 gig of ram....ive read thats more than enough to run vista..

It's not overrated at all...in fact, it's underrated...when have you seen people say it's actually good?

Not too often. If you have a faster machine, and you disable some Vista features, it runs very well.

I'm running it on a C2D 2.2 with 4gig ram on my laptop and Vista has been absolutely fine for me thus far.

mine has 1 gig of ram and the 1.7 ghz processor and even when wiped and reinstalled, vista was sh!t compared to xp... i turn all the bs features off on both os's.

If you want pretty get a mac

youll be able to run it, but it wont be as fast as your xp was. I loaded it on my Vaio thats 512mb of ram and 32mb vid card and it worked just was slow
