Looking to go lower.

I've got 4 punch 8"s in a custom box, off an MB Quart 800 watt amp. They get way loud, but cannot hit the lower notes. Anything below about 35hz and the subs bottom out. I am thinking about getting 1 Alpine type-r, building a box, and pumping 800 watts through it. It should get lower due to the increase in cone size, but will it be as loud, or louder than 4 8"s?

4 8s have more cone area and more motor force than the 12 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

box is probably the problem //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Ionsql designed the box for me, it's designed to the specs for the subs. I am not to familliar with tuning, but it's tuned to 42hz. When it's tuned for that, what does that mean? Is it that anything below that range will not play right, or just meant to be louder at that range?

it means that its designed to be most efficient at 42hz, and anything else won't play as accurately or as loud........you see most boxes tuned lower for street beating and higher for pure dbs in comps.

but i always run sealed for sq so i'm not your best resource here lol

to more directly answer what tuning freq does

the tuning freq of a ported box is where the box is the loudest and experiences a peak there ( typically 3db )

when you play below that tuning the box causes a fall off and it is not as loud

What about the ranges above the tuned frequency? Do they fall off also? Say I tune to 32 and play a 42. If I want to tune my box to 32hz the only way to do it is to build another box right?

i still think a decent single 12" would be better than 4 cheap 8's...i had 3 12's and alot of my single setups where louder.. more speakers doesn't always mean louder
