Ported is a better solution by a long shot, in my opinion, as long as you know how to use it in a vehicle. It is certainly more capable of "reference quality" output than any sealed system using the same driver.

i cant stress this enough. people give ported boxes a bad rap because they can design one properly, tune one properly, or load one properly. if you are off on volume, port, or the volume and port relationship, you are going to sound like garbage.
a properly built ported box has the potential to sound extremely good. my current box is spot on for the vehicle. i have the most range i have ever had out of many many setups, and it has the most definition and cleanest note shifts i have ever had.

I'll second the recommendation of the Diamond Audio D9.

I run the TDX, which was Diamond's top-end driver prior to the swap to the new models (TDX and D9 are supposed to be the same sub excepting the D9 has an obviously different model number and a black cone) and on adequate power it sounds flat great and will get plenty loud if you ask it to.

I would say an ID Max or RE SE or SX. Or look into ED.
