Hi, new to the forum. been out of the car audio scene for a while and was looking for some good higher power replacement 5x7 6x8 speakers for my minivan(don't laugh). any suggestions would be great. was looking at earthquake audio tnt's or 350w pioneers. the amp i will be running puts out 300w peak power.

Do not read too much into speakers power ratings. First, the "max watt" power rating of amplifiers and speakers is nearly meaningless. The RMS watt rating is far more important. Next, a lot of speakers will not really handle the rated RMS power if you move the high pass crossover low enough, and what's the point of high power handling if the speaker bottoms out on bass? This is an important consideration since most power usage occurs at low frequencies. I have heard that a speaker consumes roughly half of all power used at frequencies below 150Hz. I have seen a "100watt" woofer bottom out on SPL-ish content with 50watt channel even though 80Hz HP was used. My point is, like I said.. do not obsess with what a speaker can handle. Most will handle just 50-70watts add or subtract. Very few, often pretty expensive ones will handle more.

If you can afford JL Audio's C5-570x coaxial speakers, I guess that's one way obvious way to go. These are some of the very few high-endish speakers that have an oval version so it fits without any adapters. If C5-570x is too expensive, then look at the JL C2 version.

I've have good results with Rockford Fosgate T1's, which have the beefiest magnets out of the 5+ sets of 6x8/5x7's that I own. They are relatively cheap, but make sure you have a decent amount of clearance in your door (from your window) and they will rock. I'm kinda in the same boat as you but I'm searching for something that can handle a little upwards of 100-130 rms and I'm having difficulties. If possible, I would definitely try and get some 6.5 speaker adapters made so it opens you up to the MUCH more common 6.5" speaker size so you can pretty much run wild.

Are 6.5's that much better then 6x8's? I was thinking about putting a 6.5 in the rear door for mid and a good set of 6x8 up front for the full range. I was lookin at the jl's but also earthquakes and critical mass. Probably just go with the jl's. Thanks for all the good info!

I don't think oval speakers are inherently worse. It's just, most high end companies do not offers oval speakers. I think JL Audio C5-570 and Image Dynamics XS-57 is the only choice of better oval speakers. But look at Hybrid Audio, Focal, Hertz, etc. They have only components with round speakers. Even mid-fi components are hard to find in oval form (you're pretty much limited to JBL/Infinity, and a couple of others).
