Looking for a new sub around the $400 range..

Currently I have a Kicker L5 15" D4 running on a Planet Audio 1400.1 running at 2Ohms at 1k RMS.. It's not a bad sub Hit a 141 DB when it was in my Grand Am awhile back..

Well now i'm looking to upgrade... I want to upgrade just my sub, and keep my current amp. I'm more into spl than I am SQ... Plus I want to be able to get more low end bass.. The L5 in this box gets somewhat low, but anything under 26hz is just crap..

I've been looking at a few different subs and the ones that have come to mind are:

Sundown X 18 (Currently out of stock till Summer I believe)

HDC3 18

DC Level 4 18

So it can be $400 give or take.. Any Recommendations would be nice..

Also if anybody has any recommendations on some deadener that'd be nice.. This L5 has destroyed the hatch in my explorer and I can tell I lose ALOT of SPL from it..

Don't think u could go wrong with any of those. I have no hands on exp with any of them but all of them are going to be better in every way the ur l5. I can say sound deaden and a layer of extra weather strip will fix that back hatch. In extreme cases great stuff expanding foam. Any where it won't interfere with the latch and what not, will give ur subs a more stable loading wall. My obsidians did a number on my explorer.

I'd also look at upgrading the amp. Maybe spend a couple hundred on the amp and couple hundred on the sub. Get a custom box made and even with a 200 dollar subwoofer budget in the right box with the right amp I think you'll be pleased.

What would I need to upgrade my amp to? I know some PA amps arn't all that great, but I've heard/read that the BB (Big bang) series can actually do true numbers as what it says..

The BB series is actually pretty decent or so I've heard. You didn't specify. I just assumed it was one of the more typical PA amps. Have you looked at possibly running a couple 15's? Maybe something like these:SoundQubed HDS215 89 bucks a pc. shipped and you'd have plenty left over for a custom box. At 600 rms a pc. they'd match up pretty well with your amp as well. Just an idea...

I've got three of those. Can't wait to wire them up. I haven't heard any first hand reviews about the hds2's but I look forward to sharing my review lol. Look pretty sturdy though. Good price for what you get imo. Definitely a consideration.
