To a degree I can sympathize with this ~ I don't much care for people getting in my face either. Let me be very clear in this so that you do not misunderstand my intent - I can sympathize with your position about someone getting in your face to a degree only. 

That degree only allows for people getting in your face that are not completely justified in their actions.

The elderly woman you are telling us about WAS totally justified in her actions. You were being an asshat and if that lady had the wherewithall to rotate your volume knob completely counter-clockwise then forcefully remove it from the deck I would have applauded her actions had I been witness to it. It is ignorance such as was (apparently) proudly displayed by yourself then defended publicly in here that creates the public's animosity towards aftermarket car audio enthusiasts in the first place.

Do I wang my gear when I'm somewhere that I know it isn't going to be a nuisance to multiple people? Absolutely I do. I wouldn't have bothered to acquire and/or install any of it to begin with if I didn't want to use it. Do I have enough couth to have a bit of restraint volume-wise in places where such restraint is would certainly be appropriate? Again - absolutely I do.

Your rights go as far as their effects on YOU, once you cross that boundary and start affecting other people, that is where your rights STOP. It is a PRIVILEGE for you to even have a car stereo at all, it is not your right to be an annoyance to everyone around you who doesn't want to listen to your music.
